Reviews - What do our customers think?
 | Frustrating for kids to do on their own May 20, 2010 |
| I have held out reviewing this game for a long time because it seems that the other reviews are so positive. My daughters (7 and 3) were so excited when we took it out of the box and pulled out the microphone. However, after 10 minutes of trying to navigate it, my 7 year old gave up and hasn't returned to it. I have helped my 3 year old play it a few times, but haven't been able to get my 7 year old re-engaged at all. And even my 3 year old rarely asks to play it. Maybe it is because they have electronic books on our computer/iphone/etc that this doesn't hold their attention as much as it does other kids. I am bummed though, because it is an expensive game! | | | | Interesting use of microphone, but boring and unengaging Apr 28, 2010 |
I got this through the this site Vine program and was excited to find a Wii game aimed at the younger age set. My husband and I love playing games on the Wii but were at a loss to find games easy enough to play with our 3 year old son.
This game comes in a larger box with a wired USB microphone and the game itself. I was a little disappointed that the microphone was wired. When we play, the person with the microphone has to sit within 4-5 feet of the console unless you get a USB extension cable.
When the game comes up you are an blob like character and you have the choice to go in one of four rooms; the apple room, the orange room, the grape room, or the acorn room.
The acorn room lets you control game setting, so there is no real interest there.
The grape room lets you see your "reading report cards", so that is mainly of interest to parents and there isn't much to interact with there.
The meat of the game happens in the apple and orange rooms. In the apple room you can sing a song, voice paint, and do learning "games". There are a few songs to pick from and you can have the song sung to you or sing with the game. You can modify your voice to sound funny, so that was cool. You can record your singing, but we couldn't figure out how to play it back. My son got bored with this quickly and had trouble controlling the cursor. The other thing you can do in the apple room is voice paint. The voice painting didn't work well for us at all. The theory is that you talk into the microphone; if you speak in a high tone it draws thin lines, if you speak low it draws thick lines. We had trouble getting it to draw at all unless we were yelling into the mike. Again my son was quickly bored with the inconsistent doodling and the awkward interface. There is also a teaching app in this room; but that was pretty lame. It would bring up groups of pictures and ask you to find something and then show you the answer, very minimal interaction.
In the orange room you can read stories. You again have the choice of reading them with the game or having the game read them to you. The only neat thing about this part was that as you read in the microphone the game changes your voice to represent the different characters of the story. Again we couldn't figure out how to playback recordings. Also my son had trouble following the words during the story, at 3 year old he can't read more than a few words. So his only option was to have the game read the story to him. Again he thought this was way boring and wanted to go read a book instead.
Overall the game was a huge disappointment. It wasn't fun, the controls were inconsistent, and the content was boring. Many of the things they wanted you to do, like reading whole stories, a 3-4 year old can't do yet. Given how basic the game was I can't imagine older kids getting into it at all. It left me confused about what actual age group this is aimed at. I truly doubt we will ever load this game up and play it again. We sat down to mess with it a few times and every time the result was frustration and boredom. | | | | Low-Tech Fun for the Very Young Apr 25, 2010 |
How much enjoyment your kids will get out of this is dependent upon several factors. 1. How old are your kids? We played the game with a 3 and 4 year old. I wouldn't think significantly older children (older than 6) would be interested in this, but just the same, I don't think children younger than 3 would be interested either, but I could be wrong. 2. How tech-savvy are your kids? The children we played the game with had a lot of fun, but these kids don't ordinarily play with or around many tech items, so the microphone itself had huge appeal. If your kids are used to super high-tech, then this might not do it for them, especially considering how low-tech the sound and graphics on this game are. I'm surprised this wasn't released as a stand-alone that you could just hook up to your TV. I guess I expected more from something meant for Wii.
Based on the enjoyment of the 3 and 4 year old, I am giving this 4 stars. If it were based on my enjoyment, I would probably give it a 1 or 2, but I'm not in the age demographic for this product and have decided to put the children's opinion above my own.
| | | | Guaranteed kid pleaser Apr 24, 2010 |
| Conceptually, the product works pretty well for what its supposed to do, which is entertain children through the power of classic stories. You can read the stories to kids and mess with the voice playback to sound a little more cartoony. You can save your readings and play them a later date. I think technically, this product fails on a couple of levels. I feel like the voice playback usually sounds kinda blah and it has an overall feeling of rinky-dink cheapness to it. Even the mic doesn't feel particularly sturdy. Still, there's a good mix of stories to read (though you may want to avoid "The Little Candle Girl", which I had never read until this game introduced me to it. Let's just say my wife was in tears by the end of it...) and kids will definitely eat this up. I think this game could've used a bit more time at the drawing room stage frankly but if you want a guaranteed quick buy that'll get your child's attention, consider this an option. | | | | a bit of a disappointment Apr 12, 2010 |
| not a thing like it was advertised, not great animation or choice of stories, the voices are not great or the ability to change some preferences, the mic needs a longer cord to get back away to hear better, I would not recommend this product at all. | | | Write your own review about Storybook Workshop
