Mary Ann Shadd Cary (1823-1893)
Back: Mary Ann Shadd Cary was born to leaders in the free Black community in Wilmington, Delaware. Her father worked with the Underground Railroad, and Mary Ann was greatly influenced by her parents' dedication to freeing the slaves. She was educated in a Quaker school, and throughout her life, she taught children and former slaves in both the United States and Canada, encouraging them to become self-reliant. With the help of the American Missionary Association, she founded a racially integrated school in Canada. She became the first Black woman in North America to edit a newspaper, "The Provincial Freeman". After the death of her husband, she returned to the United States and helped recruit Black volunteers for the Union army. In her later years, she became the first Black woman to enroll in law school. She was passionate about women's rights and was one of the few women who received the right to vote in federal elections |
