Item Description... Overview 2001 GOLD MEDALLION WINNER
The sequel to Walt Wangerin?s best-selling Book of God that picks up the New Testament narratives where The Book of God left off. This new volume tells the story of Saul/Paul, beginning with his early family life, developing through his persecution of the Christians, his conversion and early ministry, his missionary travels, and ending with his voyage to Rome. Most of the information is gathered from the books that The Book of God does not include: Acts and the epistles. This story is told in an epic, fictional style, like The Book of God, but it focuses on the single character, Paul, and thereby allows for a fuller and deeper development of character and plot.
Publishers Description An intimate portrait of a complex individual through whom God was at work, turning the world upside downWith vivid imagination and scholarly depth, award-winning author Walter Wangerin Jr. weaves together the history of the early church with the life story of its greatest apostle--Paul. Wangerin begins to unfold Paul’s incredible life by imagining the childhood and early family life of a boy then called 'Saul.' A fierce prosecutor of Christians before his conversion, Paul never lost his fiery dedication, boldness, and strong personality. After his shocking encounter with God on the road to Damascus, he applied his formidable strengths to spreading the gospel. Wangerin deftly reveals Paul’s character through each stage of his life, and enables us to see Paul the person, living and complex, viewed through the eyes of his contemporaries: Barnabas, James, Prisca, Seneca, and Luke. Paul’s rich interaction and brilliant dialogue with friends and foes, leaders and slaves, Jews and Greeks, creates a swift and intense historical drama around the man who spread the seed of the Gospel to the ends of the known world. |

 | More like a resource Nov 3, 2006 |
The life and times in and around the first century are facinating. Wangerin does a perfect job of reflecting ancient times with such realism it is a joy to walk in the steps of Paul. I find Wangerin's writings a great resource aside from the fictionalization of the characters themselves.
A challenge at times with so much detail, but worth it. | | | | A good read.. Apr 26, 2006 |
| Having just started some serious study of Paul's letters in my Sunday school class, I realized I knew so little about who he was. I wanted a book that wasn't so "scholarly" and more about him as a person...in other words, a novel. This book was just that. I liked that each chapter was a different voice - it gave the reader different views of him from men, women, and enemies. I admit I would have liked it more had it flowed a bit more easily from one voice to the other, and if it had at least one chapter from Paul himself. However, I enjoyed the book immensely nonetheless. Probably best for those who want a "light" read (as if that is possible when speaking of Paul!) I should also mention that I am no Bible scholar, or theology student, just a reader and student of the Word. | | | | Yeah, but... Apr 22, 2005 |
| I really wanted to like this book. The subject was compelling to me, but much as I tried, I was bored. Some of the charachter development was rich, but all together it wasn't worth the time it took to read. | | | | Paul the biography Dec 24, 2004 |
| This is a book I have been looking for for a very long time. "Paul" by Walter Wangerin is about the apostle Paul and his mission in the First centry AD to spread the word of Jesus. On his mission he was met by many people who opposed him, the rabbis in the Synagogues, the silversmiths who made pagan idols for worship (the likness of the Greek gods, for example), and even other early church leaders. The fights with Barnabas and other church leaders over whether Jesus completes the Law or eclipses it is facinating. Also the fight over whether circumcision is nessecary for Christians was interesting too (Paul believed it should be an exclusivly Jewish custom). The book is told from the points of view of Prisca, a woman whom Paul mentors in the way of Christ; Luke (who wrote the book of Acts, which is the chief source for Wangerin's book), Timothy, Titus, and even Paul, although the only thing we get from Paul is his letter from to the churches he has establsihed. Paul is shown to be a man of tremndous faith and energy of spirit, even if his body was weak and frail. I really enjoyed this book. I really think that it put many of Paul's letters to the Churches (the books of Galations, Ephesians, Romans, and especially Corinthians, among others) into a perspective that we can understand. I am not saying this book is 100% authentic; it is, after all, a work of fiction. But I think that "Paul" is a plausable idea of how the early Church operated back then, and how we came to have many of the customs we have today. If there is any problem with this book, it is just a little tough to read, it dose get a little dry in places and is a little hard to finish; but it is rewarding if you trudge through it. | | | | awesome book about Paul Dec 6, 2004 |
| Wow - when I finished reading this book, I felt like I had been right there with the Apostle Paul through all of his missionary journeys, trials, and triumphs! I felt like Paul was my close and personal friend! The author takes the basic historical facts and truths about Paul and weaves a story around it. It made me want to get out my Bible and read Acts and other Pauline epistles. (Which I did...) Although this book is long, please don't let that intimidate you. It is worth the read! | | | Write your own review about Paul
