Reviews - What do our customers think?
 | A great novel, set during WWII May 24, 2010 |
I really liked Songbird Under a German Moon. Full of intrigue and suspense, the book captured my attention from the very beginning.
Betty's story - and the struggle she encountered as she tried to find her own identity in the midst of post-World War II helped make this story "real."
As the story develops, we learn more about how Betty came to be in Germany at the end of World War II through lies and deceit.
We also see how lies and deceit led to the events surrounding Kat's disappearance.
Without giving anything away (no spoilers here!), the story lives up to it's name and ends with a "song" - after Betty and Frank learn several life lessons, and of course, solve the mystery.
If you love World War II, and suspense, then this book is definitely for you! | | | | Intriguing Mystery Apr 12, 2010 |
Thanks to Summerside Press for a review copy of this book. I love the way Tricia Goyer helps me learn about history as she sweeps me into her intriguing stories; this one's set in 1945 after World War II is over. I immediately care about the main characters Songbird, alias Betty Lake, a singer for the occupied troops in Germany, and Frank Witt, a combat photographer, who meet on a plane ride to their new assignments. Tricia Goyer shows the aftermath and destruction of a city and pulse of the community through these character's eyes. Loved it!!
Betty is thrilled about this opportunity, but Frank thinks there's been a mistake on his assignment. He takes pictures of combat scenes, not show girls. Although, when he learns that Betty is in the show, his attitude starts to soften. He needs to win Betty's cooperation in order for them to work together to solve a mystery, in the hopes of saving thousands of lives.
I was fascinated by the setting of this book. I wondered if these places were real, what they looked like; so I googled them and here's what I discovered. Beautiful pictures of Festspielhaus in Bayreuth showed up on the web. It's a real theater built specifically for operas by composer Richard Wagner. He also constructed a home nearby called Villa Wahnfried--where the USO singers in Tricia Goyer's story stayed. I googled Richard Wagner and discovered some scary stuff the author refers to in this book about Hitler drawing inspiration from this composer's music. Tricia doesn't bog you down with an overwhelming amount of historical facts, but alludes to them through the characters and what people were concerned about back then after Hitler's death.
This is not the first book by Tricia Goyer I've enjoyed and learned from. Thanks Tricia, for your help in learning about another part of history. Thanks for a special story that has two real people caught in a whirlwind, doing the best they can to trust in God at a time when no one could trust anyone. It was a time of recovery for a country and its people. After reading this, I'm ready to read another book by Tricia, you will too.

| Only Trisha Goyer can take history and make it interesting, current, and have you begging for more! Who knew that by weaving a mystery around a USO tour after the fall of Hitler in US occupied Germany could be such a good read? Trisha of course! She took what should and normally is a depressing blightful time and actually made me want to know more by intriguing me with delightful characters, that are well 'fleshed' out, who clearly rely on their faith, but keeps it a such a level that you don't realize you are getting a lesson along the way. With a good dose of romance to boot and you have a Hallmark movie in the making! Songbird Under a German Moon, is yet another fantastic read in a long line of greats from Trisha Goyer. | | | | More like 3.5 stars. Not her best storytelling, but not bad. Apr 4, 2010 |
There were certain things I enjoyed about this book and other things that I didn't like as much. I loved the era the whole idea of the American soldiers set in occupied Germany following the war. I also liked how the soldiers received entertainment from some pretty talented singers as a core part of the plot with the creepy Wagner music theme and Hitler's obsession with Wagner's music as a backdrop. That was fun and interesting. Then the story hit a slow spot and I lost interest.
When I picked it up again and started to get back into the story I enjoyed the rest. However, there was something that didn't set right with me. I think maybe it was that I didn't feel fully immersed in the setting and wasn't fully invested in the story itself. The relationship between Betty and Frank seemed a bit artificial to me and their one argument was almost plastic, so I wasn't feeling the tension. That's the best way I can describe my perception. However, overall it was a good story. Not typical Goyer WWII fiction, though, which I've always found enthralling. Maybe that was one of the things that didn't work for me. Regardless, if you enjoy a historical mystery where someone is bent on destruction and there are some amateur sleuths trying to save the day, you should enjoy this story. | | | | Mystery and Romance Apr 3, 2010 |
Tricia Goyer's extensive research into the World War II era, including many firsthand accounts from WWII vets, shows in every book she's written about this time. Songbird Under a German Moon is no exception. Betty, Frank, and all the other characters in this book are real, fun, and I got to the end of the book feeling as though I'd made a slew of new friends. Of course, the intrigue and mystery always capture my attention, and that did not disappoint in this latest story from this author. A truly enjoyable read.
