 | Good primer for Dads on building relationships Dec 24, 2007 |
In "More Than a Dad", Scot Anderson offers valuable commentary with readable prose and homespun humor taken from his rearing four young boys. Anderson is a pastor and the book definitely has a Christian slant, but the crux of his message is about loving your kids.
Anderson delivers good advice. Several ideas particularly appealed to me:
- Helping your children develop good habits is a key responsibility of dads - "Life is about creating memories" ... do you want your kids to remember Dad sitting in front of the TV or Dad investing time in them? - "If you sow time into your kids when they are young, you will reap time with them when they're older" - Keep your word - integrity and trust are the core of the relationship - "We are the primary source of our children's self-confidence". "Kids will receive enough discouragement from the world", so we must build up their self-confidence and be a beacon of encouragement - Be careful not to over-admonish and guard against emotional rampaging; set the mood of happiness in your home - Do whatever it takes to help your kids make good choices
"More Than A Dad" has its flaws. The author contradicts himself in a few places, is a bit too forthcoming in sharing his personal life, oversimplifies financial challenges of a two-career household, trivializes mental health problems, and throws in some sloppy theology. But I recommend the reader bite his lip and keep reading, because Anderson articulates some major responsibilities that dads should assume and provides real insight to the father-child relationship.

| Scot Anderson's book, More than a Dad, was given to me as gift from my wife. I read it to please her, but his insight and humor on being a dad intrigued me to continue reading until I finished the book in only two days! It was simple and logical and sunk down into my heart, and I am finding myself successfully implementing what I learned from his book with my boys. I can see that this will so change and deepen my relationship with them. | | | | More Than a Dad Jul 10, 2007 |
| Growing up without a Father, this book has really made a big difference for me. It's has provided me with how to structure a relationship with my own two kids. As funny as it sounds, I believe people need to learn how to have a quality relationship with their kids and this book will sure help anyone to do that. | | | | Wonderfully Amazing Jun 24, 2007 |
More Than a Dad, by Scot Anderson, was more than another book on Fatherhood. His candid look at his own experiences had me both laughing and examining my own responsibilities as a father. I recommend it to any dad-or dad to be.
Scot has absolutely the best advice for any father out there. He has a very practical, biblical way of accomplishing anyone's fathering goals. My book is actually like an instruction manual. Whenever I feel myself slipping, I go read it again. It's been 2 or 3 times already!!! I've only had the book a little over a year! Let me tell you, this book works. My relationship with my children is 100 times better then it was before. They talk to me about hard hitting issues, and don't say they hate me anymore. That alone was worth the price of the book!!!! Thank you so much Scot for writing this book!!! | | | | So-so May 13, 2007 |
| This is an OK book, my husband doesn't seem to get into it. Maybe just the writing style isn't appealing to him. | | | Write your own review about More Than a Dad
