 | Great book Dec 12, 2006 |
| I love the Lily series. I have 3 books. Those are the only ones that I have read but they are great. I loved this book. Even though Shad and Lily don't get along, Lily saved his life. | | | | questionable Dec 31, 2004 |
I actually decided to reread this book, just for fun. I cannot believe that my first review convieniently forgot to mention a huge flaw with this book. As I stated in my previous review, the story is about Lily Robbins and Shad Shifferdecker, the guy at her school who constantly likes to torment her. Well, Lily and the Girlz decide to teach Shad a lesson. Reni supplies the gloves, Suzy the industrial adhesive, and Lily the plan-and the girls are off to pull their latest prank-one where Shad and his cohorts are left dangling from the monkey bars, permanently attached-thanks to the girlz. Only Lily and Shad get to take the fall for the awful pranks they AND THEIR FRIENDS pull off all the time. This was where I had a problem with this book. After the prank, Lily's parents stress how it was the right thing to do to respect her friends so much that she is left to take the fall for them all alone. Where, oh where, in the Bible does it mention that you should take the fall alone for a prank involving four others and a possible lawsuit to a school for harm inflicted on three boys? Had this been real, and any girls pulled this prank, and the boys had not been able to be detached without bodily harm, there would have been a lawsuit and Lily would have most likely been carted off to Juvie! It is books like this one that enforce the dumb idea that you are not to speak up about anything. No wonder I had that mentality when I was Lily's age. Its just not cool to rat your buddies out, and now its cool for the parents to enforce school bullying and stereotypes. What is even worse is that Leo, Daniel, Reni, Kresha, Suzy, and Zooey are still fighting like cats and dogs while Lily and Shad are grounded and on borderline suspension. A prank pulled by Lily and Shad's cohorts nearly leads to the deaths of Shad and Lily, who are looking for Daniel and Leo, who are being tormented by the girls (Shad and Lily thought they had fallen into the river). This book still has memorable moments. Thankfully, the girlz finally speak up. Shad and Lily begin to get along. Lily decides not to seek vengeance on her pals for ditching her and influences Shad and his buddies at the same time. But much of this book is overshadowed by the fact that Rue is attempting to be cool by enforcing an honor system that everyone between the ages of five and thirty lives by. As far as I have read, I have never found anything in the Bible that says its kosher to take the fall for a prank so big that it could have brought on a legal battle. There is tattling, which is always annoying, and there are times where you should speak up. Lily should have spoken up. Skip this book-go on to the next in the series. If your daughter wants to read this explain how there is a time when your should fess up that you were not alone in a prank and that there is no scriptural basis for the "honor system" everyone has that is under thirty. The bulk of the book does have scriptural basis-but the whole notion of taking the blame all your own when your principal, teacher, peers, and parents all know you did not act alone is just ridiculous. Lily could have saved her and Shad's lives and this book would have been shorter had she ratted her "friends" out.
