Reviews - What do our customers think?
A fraudulent title for a fraudulent book  Mar 14, 2010
At the outset let me make it clear that I am neither Arabic, nor Islamic of faith.
I am however, a student of world religion. Although most folks look at discussion of religion with all the eagerness of an insurance seminar, reading and discussing the topic is something I find both enlightening and entertaining.

When I learned of this book I simply had to add it to my collection. I thought it would be a nice introduction to the tenets of the Islamic Faith - or at least an outline of the 10 most essential beliefs. Nothing could be further from the truth.
A more correct title for the book would have been, "10 Things Christians Will Want to Know in Order to Convert Moslems."
If you have Moslem friends and want to either make them into quick enemies or new Christians than this is the book for you. The purpose of this review is to warn you that there isn't a single thing in this book that will increase your knowledge of Islam in any legitimate fashion.

Let me start with a couple of honest questions. If you wanted to teach someone about Christianity, would you give them a book about the Bible that was written by an atheist or a Hindu? If you wanted to learn about Jesus, would you ask a Buddhist? Would you trust that these individuals would provide an honest introduction to Jesus?

That is the central problem with this book. Sadly, it is far from the only problem. The vast majority of the references the author uses to present his case come from other books written by Christians trying to either convert Moslems to Christianity, or keep Christians from wanting to investigate the actual teachings of Islam. It's an old trick of dishonest research. In order to make your falsehoods ring with an air of truth, simply quote someone elses. That way you validate yourself as well as the the author you quote. It doesn't make your comments true, but it successfully deceives the casual reader that won't take the time to actually check your references.

The author also contradicts himself repeatedly throughout the book. In 137 pages of text I found over 60 such cases. An example is found on page 13 where he says, "many sects and divisions exist within Islam, some estimates placing the figure around 150." Yet on page 15 he says, "Islam has two major sects - the Sunnis and the Shi'ites." Also, although on page 56 he states that the Trinity does not appear in the Bible, throughout the remainder of the book he refers to the Trinity as being an integral truth present in the Bible. I'll not go into a detailed discussion of the Trinity here, but you cannot have it both ways. He also repeatedly wonders why the concept of the Trinity is so confusing to Moslems. Trust me on this - you should expect some confusion from anyone if you use Rhodes' method of explaining it.

Over the course of the book, Rhodes also uses beliefs held by small and extremist Islamic groups and claims they are things that all Moslems believe. This is no different than quoting David Koresh and claiming he speaks for all Christians. While reading this book, you must be constantly vigilant in discerning where the author is quoting actual Islamic doctrine or using a disclaimer like, "according to some Moslems," or "some Moslems hold to the tradition that..." If I were to put in a little effort, I could find "some" Christians that believe Jesus and Mary Magdelene fathered children together. That doesn't mean it's either true, or scriptural. It certainly doesn't represent the beliefs of 99% of the Christians of the world.

If you, as a Christian, approach any Islamic believer with the statements within the pages of this book be prepared to be laughed at and quite possibly ridiculed. If you want to know what your Moslem friends really believe you should read books about Islam by Islamic authors. Even then, it's not the best method. If you believe the message of Christ is something to be shared, remember what the word "share" really means. It takes two to share and you won't get very far asking one person to open their mind to your message while keeping your own firmly closed. The best method of learning about what Moslems truly believe is to simply ask and then listen to the answers they give you. A good teacher is a student as well. Once you actually know what your friend believes it's very likely they will want to question you about your own beliefs. It is then you can present the message of Christ to a receptive and curious friend. God blessed you with one mouth, but two ears. If you listen twice as much as you speak you will have great success. You will certainly do much better using that method than you will if you make the mistake of assuming the things in Ron Rhodes' book are the truth. This book was written by a man with a definite agenda that placed a higher priority on converting people to his belief system than he did on presenting the truth. When "Christian Soldiers" move onward, the truth should not have to be the first casualty.

the ten things you need to know abour Islam  Sep 7, 2009
Excellent for group study and learning about Islam. Includes good suggestions about approaching Muslim in explaining Christian views.

Worth a read. Helpful to Christians  Apr 5, 2009
Definitely it will take many more than 137 pages to tell all the differences between Muslim and Christianity. Nevertheless, the author had done a good job to bring out some important ones. At least, he dares to write in page 47 that "I take no pleasure in saying a demonic spirit spoke through Muhammad, but this is precisely what the evidence seems to indicate. If I am correct in this assessment, the relevations this spirit gave Muhammad have deceived more than a billion people." No matter what, I think this book can help, in particular Chapter 10 "Dialoguing with Muslims". In short, recommended!

Below please find some of my favorite passages for your reference.

The Quran speaks of Jesus as being sinless, but it makes no such claims about Muhammad. The Quran commands that men should have no ore than five wives. Muhammad, however, married 11 women after the death of his wife, Khadija - and one of them was only nine years old. Muhammad ordered his men to raid caravans and allowed them to keep the booty as long as he was given one-fifth. Unlike Jesus, who taught that we should love our enemies, Muhammad ordered executions of some people in Mecca who had formerly opposed him. pg 44

Christians disagree with the Muslim view that heaven is a sensual place of pleasure where faithful men can have 72 beautiful maidens at their disposal and eat, drink, and enjoy full bodily satisfaction. pg 92

Read to be better informed  Jul 31, 2007
The greatest strength of The 10 Things You Need to Know about Islam is also its greatest weakness. The book embodies a clear purpose and is aimed at a particular audience: it introduces Islam to an audience of devout Christians. It is well organized and firmly grounded within a literal reading of the Christian Bible.

Author Ron Rhodes holds two degrees, including a doctorate in theology, from the Dallas Theological Seminary, and he uses this training in this introduction to Islam. The first six chapters offer an overview of the major doctrines and beliefs of Islam. In its last four chapters, Rhodes' book is a Christian rebuttal to the perceived challenge of Islam. As Rhodes writes, "The denials Islam makes regarding Christianity relate not to peripheral issues over which people can feel free to disagree in an agreeable way. Rather, Islam's denials cut to the very heart of Christianity. . . . In other words, Islam denies what Christianity regards as nonnegotiable." This book's intellectual context allows for compassion and understanding but not for compromise or uncertainty.

The book engages in an active defense of Christianity's primacy and discusses the two religions in agonistic terms as "colliding faiths." How readers react to this book will depend upon their beliefs about the relationship between logic and faith and upon their definition of the term fact. For some, facts can be received from authoritative texts like the Bible; for others, they must be agreed upon after the gathering of empirical evidence. There is little room for compromise in the book's claims: "How heartbreaking to know that Muslims die every day, hoping that Allah might have mercy on them and bring them to paradise. The reality is that to believe in Allah is to believe in a false god." From one perspective, this statement is obvious truth grounded in Scripture; from another, it demonstrates the limitations of logic when applied to the mysteries of faith.

This book likely will please devout Christians who believe in the Bible's inerrancy; it will displease Muslims and the adherents of the world's other major religions.

Armchair Interviews says: Interesting perspective with food for thought.
