Item Description... The Bible is the most important book in the history of Western civilization, and also the most difficult to interpret. It has been the vehicle of continual conflict, with every interpretation reflecting passionately held views that have affected not merely religion, but politics, art, and even science. This unique edition offers an exciting new approach to the most influential of all English biblical texts--the Authorized King James Version, complete with the Apocrypha. Its wide-ranging Introduction and the substantial notes to each book of the Bible guide the reader through the labyrinth of literary, textual, and theological issues, using the most up-to-date scholarship to demonstrate how and why the Bible has affected the literature, art and general culture of the English-speaking world. The Bible: Authorized King James Version also includes the latest biblical research, evaluated and put into context as well as discussing centuries of critical opinion. A non-sectarian, historical approach makes it suitable for a wide range of readers. A Glossary of terms used in the Notes and six maps of the Holy Land further illuminate the meaning of this most culturally influential version of the Bible. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more. |

 | Looking for a Bible? Don't overlook this one! Jan 12, 2010 |
This is a really great edition of the Bible: a classic religious text in a classic translation. As noted by others, it works for all sorts and varieties of Christians.
The only drawbacks are obvious: it is not bound in leather or leatherette, and there is no little ribbon to hold your place. If you can live without those features, place this edition high on your list! | | | | Low quality printing Oct 21, 2009 |
| This is a comment solely on the physical quality of the book: it is awful. The print gets smeared instantaneously when you touch it. The margins are too narrow - not enough to scribble anything in them, and definitely not enough room to keep your fingers in the margins so as to avoid putting them on the easily smudged print. | | | | Is this the 1611 version? Aug 27, 2009 |
| I was wondering because the price is so low. I need an original 1611 KJV, to mess with my KJV only friends. | | | | KJV as literature Apr 5, 2009 |
This Bible is intended as a source for English literature classes rather than a devotional or study bible for Christians. The good points are that it has the Apocryphal books as originally published in the KJV in 1611 but almost never found in modern printings, clear, easy to read type (a problem with some KJV bibles) and low price.
Anglicans like me need to have Bibles with the Old Testament apocryphal books in them since we include passages from some of these books, like the Wisdom of Solomon & the Book of the Wisdom of Jesus, son of Sirach, in our daily scripture readings.
This is a very thick Bible and, since it is bound in the same way an ordinary trade paperback book, it wouldn't take hard daily use for long.
The general (very extensive & comprehensive)introduction was written by skeptics & begs for a Christian rebuttal. The book introductions are all together at the back, a real nuisance. Why aren't they at the front of each book as they are in normal Bibles?
There are no references in the text so it is challenging to use this as a study Bible in the usual way.
I only carry around three KJV bibles; this one, a 1611 facsimile hardbound reprint and a KJV/NIV Parallel Bible that has very small type. Therefore I tend to use this Bible a lot & will probably buy another one like it when I wearout my current copy. | | | | KJV Bible with Apocrypha Feb 3, 2009 |
| I was glad to find a KJV Bible with Apocrypha, as I had been to a religious bookstore and they did not have it; but the book itself, a new paperback, arrived with a torn cover. | | | Write your own review about The Bible: Authorized King James Version (Oxford World's Classics)
