 | A New Century Hymnal: UCC Pew Edition Jun 2, 2008 |
| The book was in excellent condition and was received shortly after the order was submitted | | | | mis-represented product Jan 23, 2008 |
| New Century HymnalThis product link does not state "large print", so it may not be the exact product that I am reviewing. The description on this site poorly represents the actual product of a hardcover hymnal in large print. It turned out to be a ream of paper with only the lyrics in large print, no music score at all, and included a less than 1 inch 3-ring binder (the so-called "hardcover") for the user to insert the selections from the ream of lyrics for the service. I expected to recieve a hymnal like the large print United Methodist Hymnal that truly is a hardcover hymnal with lyrics and music and very little bigger than the standard hymnal. I tried to give this product a 0-star rating, but this site requires at least 1 star to pass the edit in this review process. | | | | Good Resource Sep 9, 2007 |
| I think that the UCC Hymnal is a very good resource. I love that it uses old tunes and new ones that are accessible to the congregation. The modern language is great for those of us who can't remember what some of the archaic words mean. There is also the inclusive language for people that I also like, which I think is extremely important to have in hymnals as much as possible. However, I do not like the ultra inclusive language that it has when it comes to describing God. It sounds so awkward. | | | | New Century Hymnal Aug 8, 2007 |
| Deserving of high praise as a collection of hymns of the United Church of Christ. Gender-sensitive and ethnic-sensitive throughout. Contains valuable ORDERS OF WORSHIP, HYMNS of Praise, for the Christian Year, for the Faith and Order of the Church, for the Life and Order of the Church, PSALMS and CANTICLES, SERVICE MUSIC, WORSHIP RESOURCES, and valuable index helps of Author, Composer, and Source, Metrical Index, Tune Index, Scriptural Index, Lectionary Index, Topical Index, First Line Index, Descant Index. As a member of the UCC, I am grateful to have my own copy of this excellent hymnal available as a valuable resource at any time during the week. | | | | This Pew Edition Should be in Every UCC Church Apr 28, 2007 |
A long time in coming, this UCC hymnal is what the title says, a hymnal for the new, that is 21st, century. The book presents all of the best loved hymns of the past, a fine collection of them. It also provides a remarkable sampling of the best of the hymn explosion of the second half of the 20th century. What a great way to live into God's future, by singing the songs of the faithful past and by sharing the ongoing growth of the Gospel in song!
Some highlights herein that congregations will not want to miss include one of the best songs anywhere about the Day of Pentecost: #265 "Come, O Spirit, With Your Sound!" Sung to the Early American hymn tune BOUNDLESS MERCY, it captures all the wonder and awe of the event of Acts Chapter Two and is scrupulously faithful to scripture.
Also in this hymnal is a great hymn relating to ecology and care for the world around us, #586 "Come to Tend God's Garden!" sung to that majestic tune, KINGS WESTON.
There is so much more to enjoy in this hymnal. For every committee in every UCC congregation who is contemplating a new hymnal, my recommendation would be this hymnal. No doubt some will be pushing that you pick a hymnal by some unaffiliated publishing house, but be careful. If you want your potential members from other places to feel at home, then this is one way to do it, have in your pew racks the hymnal that says "We are UCC".
If you find this review helpful you might want to read some of my other reviews, including those on subjects ranging from biography to architecture, as well as religion and fiction.
