Item Description... Overview Describes what cutting is and is not, details how to look for the signs of self-injury, and offers advice on ways to help a teenager with this problem.
Publishers Description You may have noticed them---the kids who are hiding their pain under long sleeves or wristbands. Or you might never notice them---the ones who seem to have life together except for the deep secret that they keep hidden beneath their clothes. This is no longer a fringe issue that occurs only in the most extreme cases. The truth is that many teens today are dealing with their emotional pain by inflicting physical pain upon themselves, whether we can see it on the surface or not. While we may never fully understand the motives behind self-mutilation and cutting, we can begin to understand why some teens cut, and more importantly, we can learn how to help. Hope and Healing for Kids Who Cut will take you into the world of self-injury, defining what it is---and what it is not. You'll hear stories from teens and young adults who struggle with the urge to hurt themselves, and you'll learn to recognize the signs of self-injury. In addition, counselor and professor, Marv Penner will help you understand the cycle of addiction, that has become everyday life for so many hurting teens, and he'll give you the tools and wisdom to help a self-injurer find hope and healing.Whether you know someone who is cutting, or you are struggling with this addiction yourself, Hope and Healing for Kids Who Cut is something you want to have in your 'first-aid' kit. |

 | Hope and Healing for Kids who Cut: Learning to Understand and Help Those Who Self-Injure Apr 5, 2010 |
| This book lives ups to its title in that it really does help you understand why a teen would purposefully cut or injure themself. Marv Penner has a lot of experience with and a lot of compassion for kids who are struggling with these self-destructive addictions. My husband and I had our eyes opened to a world about which we had little understanding. We really appreciated the Christian and scriptural balance brought out in this book. | | | | pretty good book Dec 7, 2009 |
| This was a good book. As an active self injurer, I found a lot of imsight from this book. It helped me cope when I was about to cut and when I felt like cuttimg. I enjoyed the stroies in this book about other cutters. Thank you Marv. | | | | hope and healing Apr 15, 2009 |
| I enjoyed this book so much! As a cutter of five years who is trying to get into helping teenager understand why they are cutting this was very helpful and insightful. Through this book I was able to see some things about my own life that I had never figured out before. | | | | very helpful and informative Sep 27, 2008 |
I found this book to be very helpful and hopeful. I believe it will be helpful to the cutter and those who care about them.
| | | | Great Book for Understanding and Helping ANYONE Who Self-Injures (even if the self-injurer is you!) Apr 15, 2008 |
I read a pre-publication version of this manuscript in mid-November, and I read it in one sitting on a plane ride across the ocean! (because the author's writing style is simple and so easy to understand).
As a former self-injurer and the author of InterVarsity Press's narrative --but also practical--e-booklet on cutting (Cutting: Self-Injury and Emotional Pain), I struggled with cutting for almost six years and have read a dozen books on the topic, but I still learned something new from this book! The information Marv gave on the developmental stages of adolescents was probably the most helpful section of the book for me; it made sense of why all the "issues" in my early childhood (child of divorce, part of a blended family, feelings of abandonment and rejection) that didn't seem to be a big deal as a kid came to a destructive head during adolescence.
Overall, Marv's book provides a balanced look at why people self-injure AND how to help them. It's a worthy contribution to the growing body of Christian literature on the subject. | | | Write your own review about Hope And Healing For Kids Who Cut
