Item Description... Overview To the 20 million Americans who suffer from depression, and to their families, William and Lucy Hulme bring the promise to hope and healing.
Writing from his own battles with depression and his experiences as a pastoral counselor, William Hulme helps depressed persons and their families understand depression and its treatments. Woven into his story are his wife Lucy's struggles as a caregiver. Her thoughts show how depression affects the whole family and how family members and friends can best help the depressed person.
In addition to medical and psychological care, the Hulmes stress the spiritual benefits of prayer and meditation.

 | In my top 5 favorite books of all time Apr 1, 2006 |
Clearly and beautifully written, incredibly helpful for Christians persuing their walk. He explains so powerfully the importance of prayer and the essential attitude of prayer, which is depending on God for your every need. From the very starting point of asking Christ into your heart to the prayer life that follows, we only need to ask, and all of the power in the universe is under God's command. Important topic, awesome book. Hallesby and C.S. Lewis are my favorite Christian authors. | | | | Essential primer on prayer Mar 19, 2006 |
| If you do not have this excellent, timeless book on prayer, then your library has a big hole in it. This book is not a quick read in that it inspires meditative reflection--and perhaps, self judgment for prayerlessness. Note what Hallesby says about the necessity in true prayer--faith and helplessness. Fortunately, this book continues to be in wide circulation, so you can get it from this site.com for little more than the shipping and handling. | | | | Frustrated in prayer? You need this book! Feb 9, 2006 |
| This book helped me understand prayer. Most important for me are these four lessons. 1) Ask of God with the paradoxical combination of helplessness and absolute confidence. 2) Don't tell God HOW to answer your prayer - be like Mary who said simply "They have no wine." 3) Pray constantly - if you have the time to think a critical thought when passing a stranger on the street, try praying for them instead. 4) Pray as specifically as possible for particular people and situations, as it will attune you to recognize God's answers and to learn gratitude. Whatever your frustrations in prayer, Hallesby addresses them, and this book can help turn prayer into less work, more play. It can help you to more productive prayer, and a more fulfilling Christian life. | | | | Challenging and thought-provoking Sep 6, 2005 |
| This book made me think a lot about how I pray. It would be great for discussion. I've already recommended it to two close friends. | | | | A Foundational Title Jan 10, 2004 |
| I have read this book several times over the years. Each time I find myself a better person. This is certainly one of the foundational books on living the Christian life. The book is easy to read, comforting, challenging, and simplifies an otherwise intimidating aspect of our faith. Get this book. I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I. | | | Write your own review about Prayer
