I've had this bible a few months now and have been enjoying it and learning from it. The New Living Translation is a 'meaning for meaning' translation as opposed to a 'word for word' translation - and I have personally found that this translation makes it quite easy to sit and read large sections at a time and comprehend the overall picture of what was going on, and that following up with detailed study with the NASB, old standard KJV, and ESV promote a fuller understanding of scripture. The single-column, paragraph format makes for easy reading too, and I hope this page layout becomes more popular in other bibles in the future.
Though I did begin trying to keep up with the 'dates' for the daily readings, and am still somewhat doing that, I find this is the bible I like to use to skip about, reading passages at random, and have found myself caught up in the stories on several occasions, losing track of time and turning page after page. It is fascinating how the books of Kings, Chronicles, Samuel, and many others are all together in places, a paragraph or a page of one, then the other, according to their historical time-line. This feature also makes finding specific passages very difficult, but the chronological format is not intended to be used for that, and this should not be your 'only' bible.
Quibbles: There is an odd artistic 'squiggle' decoration along the top of the pages I find a bit distracting and pointless ... and I wish the cover were a bit more hefty. I am concerned that this bible will be quite worn out after a year or so. | | | | Great deal Apr 14, 2010 |
