| I found The Only Road North a good read but somewhat melodramatic. I thought at times the author was writting more for effect than for description. Having been in Tanzania and Uganda myself, I found his descriptions very accurate. At times it was a bit tedious but overall worth the effort | | | | AMAZING STORY Dec 7, 2009 |
| After listening to Eric in person at the Air Force academy NCLS I wanted to hear more of the story. I went immediately and bought this book. It is an emotional roller coaster that made me re evaluate many of my ways and my thinking. This is definetly an exceptional story and one that everyone should read. What a courageous young man. | | | | The Only Road North Aug 25, 2009 |
The Only Road North is a book by Erik Mirandette. He was a young man in his second year in the Air Force Academy when he decided to feed some emptiness in his soul by taking a break in his formal education and serving for a year in Africa with a humanitarian organization.
Instead of satiating his appetite it awakened new passions in him. He found himself building friendships with marginalized people and risking his own freedom and safety to help meet their needs. A dream developed in Erik to experience Africa in an adventurous way- riding a dirt bike north from Cape Town, South Africa all the way to Egypt with his brother and a close friend. His book tells the story of a journey of faith that is far from over.
I devoured the book on my own trip up north. For me it was only a few hundred miles from home on a camping trip with my family. But in the shelter of my tent and the absence of the daily routine I found the time, made the time, to read Erik's haunting, African ride.
I was challenged by some of Erik's tough questions and observations- not of Africa or poverty or motorcycle missions, but of life, death, sacrifice, purpose and faith. He earned the right to ask them, though not willingly.
In his own words,
"If I had known three years ago that embracing my purpose [would cost me this] I would have never set foot on that plane. I would have never even thought about it. I would have without a second thought or hesitation thrown my destiny right out the window and preserved the comfortable life that I was so lucky to have. But I wasn't given that choice. My choice was to either follow and believe, or not." | | | | Excellent read! Apr 27, 2009 |
| I was hooked from the start, very moving! I think that most people long for something else in their lives, and are not always sure what "it" is or how to find "it". This book shows that you need not know all of the answers, and Christianity is not a cookie cutter experience. Life is a journey and these young men certainly had a journey of a lifetime. I was saddened by Eric's loss of his brother, but Alex lived more fully than most people do during their much longer lives! A wonderful read! | | | | Rock the World Mar 25, 2009 |
| I was inspired by the story. I want to change the world. This boy/man has been "disconnected from the matrix" that is the american christian lifestyle. After reading this story and other stuff, I feel disconnected too and afraid. Yet, I cannot go back to a life of emptyness of shopping for Gymboree clothes and watching the Today show. I miss Alex Mirandette. I did not know him - but I miss him still. I hope to raise sons like Erik and Alex. Thanks for telling your story, Erik. | | | Write your own review about Only Road North
