Mediocre recipes using too much mayonnaise  Aug 29, 2008
I got this book because I am doing some of the food for my wedding and wanted some large quantity recipes. There aren't that many recipes to choose from and they weren't particularly innovative or good looking. Doing baked beans out of the Van Camp's Pork n' Beans cans isn't my idea of good food. That said, if you are just completely lost but want to do your own food this book basically does all the planning for you- provided that you have enough people to pull it all off. The plans are just so specific that it doesn't leave much room for flexibility.

Very Informative, lots of detail  Oct 19, 2006
I found this book to be very helpful in telling all the little details for catering your own wedding or function. Exactly how many people you will need to help, exactly what/how much food to buy, what serving equipment is needed, how many tables needed, and how to set them up, with detailed floor plans. All of the little details that will make or break the function - and your sanity. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star, is I'm not knocked out by the menus. However, that said, they would be easy to substitute and you still have a great idea of how much food you need to feed a certain number of people, and how to serve it etc. Reading this book helped us make our decision whether or not to cater our wedding ourselves. I borrowed this book from the library, but will purchase it myself, as we have decided to DIY catering for our wedding next Sept. and I'm sure it will be invaluable as the event nears.

Awesome Bride's Resource  Nov 29, 2005
The previous edition of this book was spectacular. It helped me plan a beautiful hor'd ourve reception for 300 people for under 1000 bucks! People raved about it and it was wonderful! This book helps you plan every last detail.

Okay - if you just want to feed your guests  Apr 22, 2005
I was very disappointed with this book. The recipes lack imagination and creativity. I would put them in a "potluck" category. As mentioned by other reviewers, the authors assume you have a staff of volunteers who can assist before, during, and after the reception. Although they make suggestions on how to arrange a buffet, they don't offer much as far as presentation is concerned so that it doesn't LOOK like a do-it-yourself job. If you are having a casual or informal wedding reception and have LOTS of people to help, then this book may be useful to you. If your goal is to have a formal or elegant wedding, or if you want to have your friends and relatives to actually ENJOY your wedding, then you should pass on this book.

A Realistic Approach  Jun 19, 2004
This book has drawbacks. It assumes that you have a LOT of reliable people prepared to help you cook. It is not a cookbook, and does not provide gourmet recipes. And it also assumes that quite a few people will be able to "work" during the reception, as well as ahead of time.
But it sure is a great help for those who want to have a wedding without hiring a caterer. With plans for a basic reception, an elegant one, a dessert reception, brunch, and even a barbecue, it will have a plan that will approximate your ideas.
Each plan includes shopping lists, with "hardware" like tables as well as food; diagrams for tables, rooms, and trays; and step-by-step directions. There are details of everything down to how to arrange the guest book table and where to put the groom's cake.
It is easy to adjust the recipes to your own taste, but the ones suggested are up to the usual standard for catered meals. And -- given plenty of willing helpers -- they will work, too. You may choose to get your ideas from one of the more elegant photogrph-filled books on the shelves, but you can still use this book to translate those dreams into reality.
And if you are doing a strictly cake-and-punch wedding, this book will allow you to set everything up with confidence in record time. It's worth having.
