Overview
Traces the life of the Christian theologian whose faith led him to speak out against Nazism and join in unsuccessful attempts to assassinate Hitler, discussing the personalities and experiences that shaped him and detailing his role in the religious resistance to Nazism.

Publishers Description

From the "New York Times" bestselling author of "Amazing Grace," a groundbreaking biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the greatest heroes of the twentieth century, the man who stood up to Hitler.

A definitive, deeply moving narrative, Bonhoeffer is a story of moral courage in the face of the monstrous evil that was Nazism.

After discovering the fire of true faith in a Harlem church, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became one of the first to speak out against Hitler. As a double-agent, he joined the plot to assassinate the Fuhrer, and was hanged in Flossenberg concentration camp at age 39. Since his death, Bonhoeffer has grown to be one of the most fascinating, complex figures of the 20th century.

"Bonhoeffer" presents a profoundly orthodox Christian theologian whose faith led him to boldly confront the greatest evil of the 20th century, and uncovers never-before-revealed facts, including the story of his passionate romance.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
I love this book!!  Jun 10, 2010
Wow, very thorough and complete with some many original material and actual correspondence. One of the best biographies I have ever read. A must read if you are a serious Christian about one of the finest Christian leaders of the the Twentieth century. Many situations discussed in the book have relevance to today in America. Bonhoffer was serious about getting back to the Bible and using God's Word to bring about change in our lives.

Meet Bonhoeffer  Jun 6, 2010
I picked up this book and could not put it down. Well, I did put it down to eat, sleep, go to work, and talk to my family. But I read it at every available moment until I finished it -- all 500 plus pages. Although I have been familiar with Bonhoeffer's story and theology for many years, I never actually met the man. Metaxas' biography enables the reader to probe Bonhoeffer's thinking, identify with his struggles, and feel his emotions. The author's thoroughness also filled in many of the gaps in information about Bonhoeffer that existed in my mind. Even though the author is not an academic theologian, he handled Bonhoeffer's theological thinking very capably, recognizing many of the nuances. The author expertly walked the line between providing a general biography and an academic/theological one. In the process, he has opened a door into Bonhoeffer's life and thinking for both the general and academic reader. By reading this book, prepare yourself to be awed and possibly changed by the powerful example of this remarkable person.

The author, at times, does quote Bonhoeffer and others at length, which does create some slow reading. German theologians tend not to be quick "reads." I found this practice somewhat distracting. However, I suspect that the author made this editorial decision out of a deep respect for the power and depth of Bonhoeffer's words.

This book is certainly one of the best 20 books that I have read. I recommend it very highly.

I am not quite certain what the author is trying to accomplish  Jun 1, 2010
Ebehard Bethge, theologian and Dietrich Bonhoeffer's best friend, wrote a massive thorough definitive biography of his beloved friend.Since then , others have tried, most content to use Bethge's book as a touchstone for futhering their braching off into areas of Bonhoeffers theology. Now Mr metaxas has written this new biography which is strangely devoid of feeling. I have read only the hagiography of Wilberforce which Mr Metaxas wrote, so I do not have a deep knowledge of him nor his beliefs, though he inserts some odd beliefs into Bonhoeffers narrative. His}Bonhoeffers] deep love for his Fiance` is barely treated[it is given a half dozen pages] the reason for this is unknown[was the writer uncomfortable with the age difference?}He acknoledgement of Bonhoeffers pacisfism is incomplete, his controversial remark in a letter to Bethge of"religionless Chrsitianity' is neatly explained away[sigh]. He also includes some, and this one comes from the authors politics, commentary on the specious philosophy of intelligent design!WOW! Having read virtually everything that DB wrote that has been printed in English,I cannot figure where this came from, except the authors fervent dreams.} In the end, it is another attempt by a welterweight[at best] to move up in weight class.Bonhoeffer was a heavyweight, a good great man, but a man, flawed, happily human. What he was not was a right wing fundamentalist, nor a stooge for someone else agenda. Stick with the DBWorks and the bethjge bio. Not Recommended!

A Hero for all of us  May 30, 2010
wish I had this book while teaching History (WW II) years ago. A very intricate view of why Bonhoffer was the man he became and also a good history of the times in Germany, especially about the church. How easy to succumb to the easy road. Challenges the reader to stand up and be counted and live and die for a just cause. Should be required reading for all college students.

An Inspiration  May 29, 2010
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a young pastor during the rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany. He led a movement called the Confessing Church which encouraged German Lutheran churches to break away from the state church because of its support of Hitler. He joined the conspiracy to kill Hitler and eventually paid for it with his life.

I've read a bit about Dietrich Bonhoeffer as well as two of his books (Cost of Discipleship and Life Together) but this book was very illuminating. It goes into great depth about Bonhoeffer's life as well as his theology, which I found very interesting (although the average reader may find that the theology and the discussion of the Confessing Church is more than they want to know). The author drew extensively from letters that Bonhoeffer, friends and family wrote as well as his writings and journal entries which gave the book a high level of credibility.

If you've seen the movie Valkrie then this book will fill in a lot of the back story behind the failed assassination attempt on Hitler. It reveals that the conspiracy ran much deeper than the movie implied. And the fallout was deeper too...with about 1000 people being implicated, tried and killed.
The book gives interesting detail of Bonhoeffer's last days even though we have no writings from him at that time. One of his fellow prisoners wrote about it extensively.

Bonhoeffer is an inspiration. He was a man of great conviction and as the subtitle suggests, a prophet. He knew where Hitler was taking Germany long before most people has any clue. While the nation was embracing Hitler, Bonhoeffer was warning the nation and the church of where things were headed. Though cumbersome in some parts I think this is an excellent read.

Disclaimer: I review books for Thomas Nelson in exchange for free books. But I'm free to write anything I want about the book, good or bad.
