| These stories get to the point on the toughest questions that I've always wanted answered by Catholics and provided me with answers that are more satisfying than what I've traditionally heard from protestants on these issues. (Actually, anything would be more satisfying than the answers I've been given relating to James 2:24.) | I have read and re-read the Surprised by Truth books, and always seem to learn something new. The converts to Catholicism in these books include former Protestant ministers, which is always so interesting to see how someone so steeped in Protestant doctrine comes to the fullness of truth. | I am trying to learn about Catholicism right now and am interested in why other people have converted. I chose this book thinking that 11 different stories would give 11 different viewpoints. I was sorely mistaken. All eleven converts were involved members of evangelical protestantism. That means that all of their reasons are filtered through their first faith and because I have never even considered that faith attractive, this book did nothing for me. Most of the authors site that a reason for their preference for Catholicism was because of the Protestant's way of every minister is on his own in his interpretation and no church is consistent with any other. They say that they like the steadfastness of the Catholic Church. I discussed this with my German husband and he says that that division of all the different churches seems to be more American than anything else because it isn't like that in German Protestantism. Their reasons for becoming Catholic are only valid if 1)you are already Christian and 2)if you already believe the Bible is true 3)if you think that God has ordained everything Catholic and 4) if all of the above applied, then you had been VERY evangelical. It's been a few years since I read this book which was instrumental in my conversion to the Catholic Church. There's no denying that the book is aimed largely at Protestants, as most of the contributors were once Protestant of one denomination or another. The book's greatest benefit is that it merges theological arguments with personal narrative. It's not enough to know that someone decided to convert, and neither is it enough to know a set of arguments. By wisely adopting a theo-narrative approach rather than a potentially wishy-washy autobiographical or an argumentative theological approach, they managed to get the best of both worlds in a format that is easy to read and which does not immediately raise one's defenses.
The only downside is that this book seems to be written almost solely for the Protestant Christian. Perhaps prior atheists and neo-pagans would not be so quick to write about all the reasons for their conversions, but it would have been good to have some balance in this volume. (As I recall, the later volumes do indeed branch out into these areas.) But this is a minor criticism against a book that has done so much good. | | | | Surprised by Truth: 11 Converts..... GREAT BOOK; A FUN READ! Personal conversion stories are so interesting, honest yet compelling; reminiscent of the amazing conversion of Paul in the New Testament. (I imagine those of the faith from which Paul converted were just as perturbed as those who have criticized this book.)
