Overview
To save the world from destruction, rescue their kidnapped mother, and battle the evil Taksidian, the King siblings try to control the mysterious portals in their house that send them to different time periods.

Publishers Description

They've been to three worlds in less than a day. Time isn't just running out...it's running wild.

David King is reeling from his travels through history-and the evil he's found there. The last thing he needs is his great-great-uncle Jesse's hospital-bed instructions: You can't simply do nothing. You must fix things.

David and his brother Xander's search for their abducted mother has repeatedly led them on strange and terrifying journeys as they've stepped through the portals of the creepy old house and into some of history's most turbulant moments...and confronted an unimaginably bleak vision of the future.

Now Jesse's words saddle them with an obligation to not only visit the past, but the need to rewrite it.

Fulfilling their purpose will take everything they have, both mentally and physically. But they have no choice...because everything in the past-and the future-is on the line.

Whirlwind, The Dreamhouse King series  Jan 8, 2010
The Dreamhouse King series was introduced to me by a friend of my child. I have been stuck on them ever since. Each book leaves you suspended on what is to happen next. And you can't wait to purchase the next book. I love the bond between each family member. And I love how the writer is taking the story. This last book, wow!!!!, to end up in the mysterious world of the lost city of Atlantas. That was a turn I wasn't expecting from the author. As a reader you love to be surprised. I was able to take my imagination from seeing the movie Atlantis from Dysney and applying it to where the boys ended up to imagine what it looked liked. The Dreamhouse Kings is the most exciting book I have got hold of in a long time. It is one you can't put down and then you when are finished can't wait until the next book is out.

Sincerely,
Sharon G. Camp, RN

The adventure continues  Jan 3, 2010
Whirlwind is the 5th book in the series of the King family and their creepy strange house.

Xander and Dae continue to jump through the time portals while Dad and Toria travel to find the origin of the monster invading their house.

Liparulo continues the high level action and adventure along with the thrills of the first four books in the series.

The series is just a darn good read.

Caught in a . . . Whirlwind  Dec 22, 2009
The fifth book's title in the Robert Liparulo YA Dreamhouse King Series implies the intensity turns up another notch in this leg of the minute-by-minute journey through time portals and dangerous civilizations and circumstances. Xander and David King, literal brothers and often brothers-in-arms, continue to travel into unknown situations in hopes of finding and rescuing their captured mother.

Each book picks up where the previous one finished so in spite of the six month intervals between them, the dire circumstances come roaring back to mind as one or all of the King family contends with the evil Taksidian and his lurching destroyer the family calls Phemus. David is stuck in a narrow chamber filled with dead people's bones somewhere in Taksidian's house. Xander must listen to Taksidian describe how he plans to murder the young man, and Dad plots how to rescue his sons. Toria hears faint screams and alerts Keal who was once in Special Forces but is now their aged great-great uncle's caretaker.

In Whirlwind David and Xander visit Uncle Jesse in the hospital, and though he is weak, his eyes come alive when he describes the meaning of visiting the historic times and places offered by the portals in their house. His connection with David gives him the ability to convey how vital their purpose is in restoring or completing history as it should be. It gives new meaning to their dubious travels and what they can accomplish if they just pay attention. Of course that's easier said than done since most of the time they're running or fighting for their lives.

This particular segment of the story leads into more of an overall spiritual purpose which David begins to ponder. Xander also considers who Taksidian might be.

I've said it multiple times before, and I'll say it again: Robert is the master of pacing. These stories invite the younger crowd to zoom from one historic timeframe to another in a matter of minutes and hours all the while experiencing one startling and often hapless event after another. Robert's marketing tactics for these books have included multiple visits to schools across the country to discuss these stories and writing and reading, a website which invites readers to contribute (and receive credit for) plot elements, enter contests for great gifts including autographed copies of all the books and other great prizes, and book signings which have turned out to be major events for fans of all ages.

As with each book, Whirlwind ends in another crisis for the two boys and leaves readers eager for the final sixth book in the series titled Frenzy which promises more of the same. There is some discussion about continuing this series, but the six books conclude the initial run for the King family. Kids of all ages--make that readers who don't easily scare--and who enjoy the thoughts of time travel and thrill to action rides will take great pleasure in the harrowing adventures of this ordinary family in this strange house.

Most Exciting of the Series  Dec 22, 2009
As someone who's been looking forward to this book for a long time, I couldn't wait to re-join the King Family and their crazy adventures in time.

This book ramped up the excitement and the intensity of earlier entries in the series, and is easily the stand out book of the five that are out so far. It's really paid off to stick with the series since the beginning as old questions are being answered and mysteries are hurtling towards their conclusion in the final book out next Spring. Liparulo's characters are growing chapter by chapter as they deal with situations way beyond what most teens and pre-teens have to deal with. Seeing the arcs of David and Xander throughout the series has been one of the most rewarding parts of reading each new book.

If you've not read the others in this series, immediately go out and grab book 1. You will not regret it.

Run, David - Run!  Dec 19, 2009
The fifth installment in Robert Liparulo's Dreamhouse Kings series picks up from the cliffhanger ending of Timescape, with David King trapped in a bone-filled prison, and Xander locked into a life threatening confrontation with Taksidian. Unlike the previous installments in the series, Liparulo graciously incorporates some expository details to reminds readers of the general elements of the previous titles in the series. Still, each title builds upon the events of the others, creating deeper layers of mystery and meaning; as always, head back to the beginning, House of Dark Shadows, if you're new to this captivating series.

Liparulo's staccato, intense prose sweeps readers once more into the world of the King's and their mysterious home on a wild adventure ride. When Whirlwind arrived in the mail I devoured it in a day - par for the course with the addictive Dreamhouse Kings series. Liparulo's writing continues to maintain it's excellence, with no lack of momentum, plot failure, or disappointment, each additional title only serving to add to the growing sense of anticipation that readers are now feeling as we look towards the March 2010 release of the series finale Frenzy.

If you read very, very slowly, and pace yourself (is this even a possibility with this series?), you'll be able to avoid the aggravating wait between each new book. Thankfully the entire series has been scheduled for release over a period of a little less than two years, keeping reader anticipation high - no wait of years between new episodes.

Though still keeping his cards close to his chest, and revealing detail in incremental quantities, Liparulo gives a few more glimpses into the purpose of the house, and more importantly - of the King family's special calling. Woven together with these revelations, more notable inclusions of God's work are included in what has largely been somewhat light in traditionally Christian elements. There's no doubt that plenty of further unfolding of the Dreamhouse Kings mysteries remains to be unveiled in the story's climax.

A stronger emphasis on the importance of history and its study is felt inWhirlwind which might very well result in the series' inclusion on summer reading lists. Parents and educators reading for worldview will likely detect some subtle old-earth references working their way into the storyline, but it's not distinctive enough for me to make a solid call in this area.

As Xander and David catapult through dangerous time periods -- barely managing to emerge from them alive -- I'm surprised that they are ever able to make a difference as they blast through the realms behind the portals. Still, they continue to press on bravely in their ongoing search for answers, encountering ever more surprising settings. The final time the brothers find themselves in is incredibly intriguing - and Liparulo's trademark ending will certainly leave you on tenterhooks in this remarkable (and surprising) culture.
