Item Description... Overview With their mother still missing after going through a Civil War time portal in their spooky house, and their father in jail under a false accusation, Xander, David, and their younger sister continue to try to bring their mother back, now with the help of an old relative who has turned up unexpectedly.
Publishers Description
The house talks. It breathes. And it's hungry. The Kings have been in the creepy old place, their new home, for only a few days, but they've experienced enough terror to last a lifetime. And the mystery is growing even more baffling. Shadowy and shifting, the big house conceals doors into other worlds that blur the line between memories and dreams-and the slightest misstep can change history forever. At least, that's if they believe the trembling old man who shows up claiming to know them. "There's a reason you're in the house," he tells them. "As gatekeepers, we must make sure only those events that are supposed to happen get through to the future." The problem is that horrors beyond description wait on the other side of those gates. As if that weren't enough, the Kings are also menaced by sinister forces on this side-like the dark, ancient stranger Taksidian, who wants them out now. Xander, David, and Toria must venture beyond the gates to save their missing mother-and discover how truly high the stakes have become. |

 | Most Intense Book In the Series So Far! Oct 28, 2009 |
This is definitely the most intense book in the series yet! I was on the edge of my seat with almost every page! With Dad in a certain predicament, the kids are pretty much on their own for the most part and they go with the motto "Be Strong and Courageous".
It seems that around almost every corner someone, or something is waiting to get in the way of their mission to find mom. Some real bad guys show up in this book but luckily some good guys show up too!
We find out more about the sinister Taksidian and just how far he'll go to possess the house for himself...and what he's done to get where he's at...that dude is NOT nice, in fact he's ruthless. I don't want to give away to much because these books are so great due to surprises and twists in the plot!
Basically, you NEED to read these books if you love a good thriller--you won't be disappointed!
AWESOME!
Look for the review of Book 4: Timescape coming next! And then in December Book 5: Whirlwind!
Appropriate for 7th grade and up due to some scary situations! | | | | Ok for teen pre teen Oct 16, 2009 |
| I picked this one up because it looked interesting, it turns out its part of a series thats not mentioned in the Vine newsletter. When you first open the book it says "stop, READ THE FIRST TWO BOOKS BEFORE CONTINUING" If I had known that I would have picked something else, not very clear. Secondly with the overall writing and story style, I fould it to be a bit too juvenile for my taste. It seemed to me to be geared toward teenagers. Or younger. Still it was not bad from what I could make out, I probably would not seek out the other books, but for teens who are into horror "lite" it would be ok. | | | | A very creative and continually surprising tale Oct 14, 2009 |
We last left Xander and David King in the Civil War world where they stumbled onto a clue to their mother's whereabouts. They rush back to tell their father, only to discover Taksidian and some cops at the front door. Taksidian has reported the Kings' house as unfit to live in. Then another strange old man arrives on their doorstep, claiming to be a long lost relative. Does this Jesse really know stuff about the house? And could he be right? Had the house called the King family back because they are Gatekeepers?
I love this series. Book three took off right where book two ended and hooked me with non-stop action, adventure, and surprising new twists. I read this one so quickly, I was thankful I had book four waiting, but then when I finished book four...yep. Now I have to wait! Book five isn't out yet. Rats! I highly recommend this series for boys, especially, but also for any reader who loves suspense, action, and adventure. A very creative and continually surprising tale.

| This is the 3rd book in the series and just as good as the first. This book was all action, it starts for the beginning and just keeps going. Like the previous books it picks up where the last one left off and it leaves you hanging at the end. A couple new characters will be introduced and the stakes are higher. Excellent read for all. | | | | Be sure to read the other two first... Aug 24, 2009 |
So, I picked this one thinking that, although it was part of a series, it would be a stand-alone novel, and that having read the previous ones would be a bonus for the story, not a necessary task. Mistake.
First page of the books reads: "Stop. Read House of Dark Shadows (Dreamhouse Kings Series, Book 1) and Watcher in the Woods (Dreamhouse Kings Series, Book 2) before continuing!".
Since I did not have them available, I begun to read anyway, but it seems that reading the first two was indeed a necessity. The action begins without warning or explanation, and I struggled to understand what was happening during the first chapter. Two siblings dressed in Civil War uniforms were returning through a portal inside their house after attempting to rescue their kidnapped mother that seemed to be in one of the militia camps while their father downstairs was being handcuffed by the local police.
What?
It was obvious that I needed to know more before attempting to continue the book, so I put it aside. This one seems to be a tepid and action-without-ending novel that I could have very easily enjoyed.
Although I can not criticize the writing style and the story, I only have praise for the lay out of the book. The pages have the old-book feeling and touch, as if the book was ancient. There is a detailed map of the house at the beginning that appears to be scorched, and each chapter number is written in a nice antique-looking (or magic-looking) font. | | | Write your own review about Gatekeepers (Dreamhouse Kings V3)
