Josiah Marston, at the age of fourteen, seems little different from other boys growing up in frontier Kentucky. The Wolf's Head Journal chronicles the travels of a father and son, Levi and Josiah Marston, as they're drawn into the conflict between the settlers and Indian tribes of Ohio during the late 1700s. It's a very real and often troubling tale of their efforts to survive and bring peace to the territory.
Their story is told from the perspective of 14 year old Josiah who keeps a journal of all he experiences during this volatile period of American history. Every moment of the day is a learning experience for the boy as he's taught to track, hunt and survive in the wilderness. When father and son are captured by Miami Indians, Josiah is exposed to a different way of life and a different way of thinking about the world and his place in it. The book will appeal to young teen readers who, like Josie, are beginning a confusing and difficult time of their lives - leaving the security of childhood and entering the enigmatic world of adults. This is where the relationship between father and son is so poignant. As a pioneer, Levi has learned valuable lessons in life and survival. He is also a man of few words, and allows his actions to serve as a model for his son. Wisely, Levi gives Josie a strong moral base and passes on knowledge he feels will help his son make good decisions. Thus enabled, Josie can meet life head on with the courage and strength to take charge of his own destiny.

The lessons of courage, respect and loyality are powerful as are the parenting skills of a white father and an Indian father as fourteen year old Josiah Marston and his father Levi venture into the late 18rh Century Ohio Country. Historically accurate, the struggle between whites and the Miami and Shawnee Indians makes The Wolf's Head Journal a stimulating and instructive read.

Your middle school students will be transported back in time as they are pulled into young Josiah Marston's life in the old frontier. Historical events were well researched and much appreciated as the fictional account of Josiah Marston's adventures are revealed in The Wolf's Head Journal.
