 | Fantastic! May 7, 2010 |
Jill Marie Landis is one of my favorite authors and did not dissappoint me in this book. Mrs. Laura Foster, not her real name, is trying to overcome a terrible dark past. Her parents came from Ireland with their daughters to start a new life, but it didn't turn out that way. After the death of her parents Laura and her sister Meagan were seperated from the two youngest sisters and sold to a brothel. Laura never saw her sister again after that first night. She vowed to do what she had to do to find her sisters again and finally creates a whole new life for herself by running a boarding house. She meets Brand McCormick, a widow with two young children who also has a hidden past. A great story of forgiveness and romance. Can't wait for the next one in this series. I am happy that Jill Marie is back to the historicals. The first book I read by her is Last Chance and then I was hooked. I loved those historical books of hers! Loved Magnolia Creek and Summer Moon and Homecoming! I could go on and on but if you've never read a book by Jill Marie Landis and you like historical fiction then you are in for a treat....buy one and read it now. You won't be disappointed! | | | | Beautifully Written May 4, 2010 |
I suppose it's merely cliche that just about every Christian story I've read seems to deal at some point with a woman who had spent some time as a "Lady of the Evening" and tries to climb out of the undesirable lifestyle. Laura Foster burns brightly through that change with her own strengths and promises. And without a doubt, in a Christian story, she attracts the attention of the local Reverend who finds her not only attractive but needs to be a better part of the community.
Both Laura Foster and Reverend Brand McCormick have pasts that they had no control over until now. And both will decide how their lives will play out and what really matters ultimately to each other and to their futures.
Jill Marie Landis has a very tempered hand when it comes to writing her Christian fiction. I did not find there were too many people emotionally preaching to the 'fallen' in this story. And I love how even Reverend McCormick pursues Laura Foster, he isn't going to force his religion to her and waits for her to be ready.
Heart of Stone is the first of a series. I look forward to seeing more from Jill Marie Landis. | | | | Nice Story of Forgiveness Apr 30, 2010 |
| I enjoyed this story of a former prostitute pulling herself out of that lifestyle and trying to make an honest living by herself. Jill Marie Landis has a comfortable reading style and makes it easy to get to know the characters and see their personalities. The only disappointment I had was the curse word that was added to the dialogue of the villain. Yes, I'm being picky since it was mild (the "d" word) but I don't want Christian publishers to start down this slippery slope. They allowed one in this book so the next they will allow two, etc. If I want to read a book with cuss words, I can find plenty of them on the secular bookshelves. I buy Christian fiction because I want to avoid cussing and sex scenes as much as possible. Some, I'm sure, will argue that it helped to show us the evil side of the villain but there was no reason for that here. Jill Marie Landis did a good job of showing that he was the villain without throwing in cursing to tip us off. In my view, it was totally unnecessary. Off my soapbox now.... The overall theme of forgiveness, both from others and for ourselves, was very inspiring. | | | | Edgy and Challenging Historical Inspirational novel Apr 12, 2010 |
HEART OF STONE by Jill Marie Landis
Last year I got hooked on JML's debut Historical Inspirational novel for Steeple Hill - Homecoming, then devoured the next one, The Accidental Lawman. When I discovered her new book, Heart of Stone, published elsewhere, I had to read it, too. And what a reward it was!
Heart of Stone is the first in her Irish Angel Series and features Laura Foster, a woman who reinvents herself in 1874. When I realized this story also took place in Glory, Texas, and that Hank and Amelia, and Hattie Ellenberg and Rebekah also made appearances in this book, I felt like I'd taken a trip home.
Ms. Landis never shies away from tough topics, and the horribly dark prison of a life that Laura has managed to free herself from, and prevail, seems almost impossible to overcome for a woman of that era. I consider the issues in JML's inspirational Historical novels to be edgy and challenging for the reader, and I love that!
Laura Foster owns the only family centered boardinghouse in Glory, and she is a lady of great taste and class. When Reverend Brand McCormick notices how special she is, Laura backs away. She chooses to live out the rest of her life in quiet seclusion, searching for her lost sisters (they were all separated early in their lives). Besides being a great Reverend, Brand is a man with a heart, and seeing all of Laura's special qualities, he is ready to offer it to her. Knowing when her past catches up with her that it will ruin everything, Laura still can't resist Brand's genuine interest, and against her better judgment, she allows herself to fall for him. But she cannot bear to bring the good Reverend down and insists on keeping her distance, much to his frustration.
Possibly predictable, a demon from her past arrives in town and threatens to ruin everything. But unpredictably, something from Brand's past threatens to ruin his standing in the church, long before her sordid history is revealed to the good citizens of Glory.
The last quarter of the book had me riveted to the page. I got weepy, I laughed, I got angry and waited for Glory townspeople to realize the error in their thinking, and I rooted for a deserving couple to get their happy ever after.
I was not disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! And the best news of all is the next book - Heart of Lies, will be Laura's little sister, Megan's story. Can't wait.
| | | | A delightful romance that gives hope where there is no hope Apr 5, 2010 |
Heart of Stone is a story of sin, repentance, forgiveness and redemption told from the point of view of a woman who, as a child, was sold into a life of prostitution. The story begins many years later when she is an adult. She has finally broken free from her past and has settled down in a small town in Texas to make a new life for herself. But, just as she begins to be loved and accepted in the town, her past catches up on her, destroying any hope she had for a new life.
Heart of Stone is a story with a lesson: It skillfully illustrates God's love and forgiveness as well as man's hypocrisy when they expect forgiveness for their own sins, but refuse to give it to others.
This story will give hope to anyone who finds him or herself in a similar situation - trying to break free from sin and create a new life. It will encourage you to forgive yourself and go on to be what God called you to be.
Not only is Heart of Stone a story that touches the soul, it's also a delightful romance. It's a book you won't be able to put down once your start it. It's easy to read and offers a glimpse into life during the 19th century. I look forward to reading more from this author. | | | Write your own review about Heart Of Stone (Irish Angel)
