The book was ok, but the story became completely unbelievable. Yes, it was Christian-based (which there was a bit much of) and had a bit too much politics in it, but the author did not do her homework. That's when the story really fell apart for me.
I find it annoying when authors choose not to take 10 minutes to surf the Internet and find well known information. Ms. Kingsbury was completely wrong when it comes to what planes the US Navy flies! Yes, I am a girl; no, I am not in the military. However, I grew up at air shows and around mostly Air Force planes. The Air Force flies the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Falcon (what the US Air Force Thunderbirds fly). The Navy flies the F-18 Hornet (what the US Navy Blue Angels fly) and used to fly the F-14 Tomcat, just like in the movie "Top Gun."
Aside from incorrect information, the story is too much into "what ifs," and for adults, the characters sure act like children. It's hard to swallow that a 17-year-old with a seemingly good head on her shoulders could not fathom the possibility of receiving wrong information. Or an 18-year-old Internet savvy girl didn't think there might be an alternative spelling to a last name (not that she ever asked how it was spelled in the first place or looked on her birth certificate). It's also unlikely that a 30-something military pilot would have stopped trying to track down at least the grandparents of his child. I could go on, but I won't.
Inaccuracies aside, and take away some of the fluff, there was a shallow plot, and it is sad at the end (yes I cried. I know what it's like to lose a loved one to cancer). I recommend not reading this book if you want accuracy in easy to find information. If you want to read it, please read it with a grain of salt.

I've loved several of Kingsbury's novels, and liked several of them. I just finished this one, and I was quite disappointed.
First off, I know the routine: when this site readers don't agree with the reviewers, they huff and click on "not helpful," presumably to protest the reviewer's opinion. Bring it on, because I know the type, and I'll get "0 of __" by this one for sure.
Anyway, the first third or possibly half of the book was very engaging, full of deep character development and a lot of interesting events. My biggest complaint was a few fluffy Nicholas Sparks-like descriptions of unimportant scenery, to fill space. During this portion of the book, I shed quite a few tears and had high hopes for the rest.
But then we skip ahead a few years (possible almost-spoilers to follow), and the story falls apart. The plot holes grow from needle-pricks to concrete tunnels. In the main development, which really won't be a surprise (and that's OK), an 18-year-old soccer player manages to do what police, private investigators, four 60-something adults and two 30-something, supposedly intelligent, adults have failed to do, and all with a few keystrokes on a search engine.
As Christian fiction goes, this is just mediocre. It reminds me of Dee Henderson's first book (the name escapes me), and it's light on God's Word, heavy-handed on political opinion, and simply not believable.
I like Kingsbury a lot, and would recommend her book "A Time to Dance" to anyone and everyone (technically, I think it should be required in every Christian marriage counseling session). But I'd recommend "Even Now" only to someone who thinks Nicholas Sparks is a literary genius. | | |  | Excellent Dec 28, 2006 |

| This book is a very well written, emotional ride. I cried through most of the pages, yet I could not wait to turn the pages to read more. Karen Kingsbury did an amazing job of bringing a readers feelings to the surface. It is a book filled with religious and political views, some you may agree with and some you may not.
