Overview
An eleven-year-old talks to God about her ardent desire to be grown up

Publishers Description
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret

No one ever told Margaret Simon that eleven-going-on- twelve would be such a hard age.  When her family moves to New Jersey, she has to adjust to life in the suburbs, a different school, and a whole new group of friends.  Margaret knows she needs someone to talk to about growing up-and it's not long before she's found a solution.

Are you there God?  It's me, Margaret. I can't wait until two o'clock God.  That's when our dance starts.  Do you think I'll get Philip Leroy for a partner?  It's not so much that I like him as a person God, but as a boy he's very handsome.  And I'd love to dance with him... just once or twice.  Thank you God.

Outstanding!  May 23, 2008
What an excellent book for a teen girl.(Not too young, though). I read this book when I was in school, way back when. It left such a profound effect on me that I still remember it to this day. I now work in a library and see girls checking it out all the time. We can't keep it on the shelf!!!

Still a Classic for Young Girls after all these years!  Apr 12, 2008
This book was one of my all-time favorites because it was the only other place that I found somebody named Sylvia which is Margaret Simon's paternal grandmother, Sylvia Simon. Margaret grew up in an inter-faith home with a Catholic Mother and Jewish father. She and her family move from New York City to the suburbs of New Jersey which was a popular thing to do at the time and still is but for other reasons. In New Jersey, she learns that she is coming of age and will soon get her menstrual cycle. How exciting for her and the girls to think that they would be able to become mothers in the future? I think they view it as a right of passage like we all did. I remember waiting just like Margaret for my time to come and the monthly cycle that would follow for the next 40 years or so. What I loved about this book which I reread repeatedly over my youth was that the author spoke to us and not at us like a teacher, parent, or lecturer. Maybe that's why authors like Judy Blume are popular to girls at a certain age. She understands us better than the adults. This book is a must for those girls out there.

Wonderful then for girls and wonderful now...  Mar 25, 2008
I read this book as a pre-teen and really enjoyed it. I purchased it for my almost 11 year old daughter with the hopes she would enjoy it too. She did, infact we started something...each one of her friend's parents purchased the book for their daughters'within 2 weeks after she received hers! Now she has the older and newer version.
I recommend this book for young girls from ages 10 to 13 and for their moms to read if they haven't already as a young girl.
I actually read it again in one day :-)

Wonderful  Jan 23, 2008
As a positive psychologist I am impressed. Blume does a wonderful job crafting a tale around the life of an 11 year-old girl, Margaret, who moves to a new town and is faced with new challenges. In rich, vivid detail we travel in Margaret's world and learn her thoughts and her feelings. The matter-of-fact way Margaret worries about boys, her developing body, and religion reassures young readers about the validity of their hopes and fears and their many questions.. Through insights offered by her characters, Blume comforts girls who face these and other very common situations.

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret  Jan 15, 2008
I'm aware that this book is for younger readers (at least, younger than me) but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to pass up writing a review of one of my favorite books of all-time.

I read this book first in fourth grade. Then again in sixth. And I remember loving it; it helped influence my big life decisions back then, because there was something so real and unique about it. I couldn't really relate to Margaret the first few times I read it, but now that I'm older and have gone through pretty much everything she has, it's so much easier to understand how she feels. I understand the search for the right religion, and the secret crush, and the wanting so bad to get your period. Though this book was written back in the seventies, I can still feel what Margaret is feeling, because I've felt the same things.

This is a really quick read, and I know I said it was written for younger readers, but I definitely think that all girls should read this book. It's just that good.
