Product Description
The Book of Psalms has occupied a central place in Jewish and Christian worship for millennia. This authoritative volume brings together the Psalms in a quartet of versions that is certain to be an invaluable resource for students of this core book of the Bible. The texts featured in AComparative Psalter represent a progression of the text through time. The ancient Masoretic Hebrew and Revised Standard Version Bible are displayed on one page, while the New English Translation of the Septuagint and Greek Septuagint are on the facing page. The same set of verses is displayed for all four texts, making it easy to compare have rendered The Modern English versions included in this volume are noteworthy for their fidelity to the ancient texts. The first major translation of the Christian Scriptures from the original languages to be undertaken since the King James Version, the RSV debuted in 1952 to critical acclaim. It dramatically shaped the course of English Bible translation work in the latter half of the Twentieth Century, and remains the Bible of choice for many people. Meanwhile, the New English Translation of the Septuagint is the first work of its kind in a century and a half. This major project brings to the fore a wealth of textual discoveries that help illuminate the Book of Psalms for Twenty-first Century readers.

* Four versions of a central text of Jewish and Christian worship in a parallel setting.

great idea long overdue   Mar 15, 2008
What a nice volume! Surprisingly, until now the only Greek English edition of the LXX Psalms has been Brenton's, which is over 150 years old. Brenton's Greek font is tiny and not clear, and the first thing that jumps out about this book is that the Greek font is big and clear. The Hebrew font is a good size too. The NET translation is very good, with notes helping with tricky Greek phrases. Having the Hebrew within sight is wonderful, since sometimes the Greek only makes sense in relation to the Hebrew. Even if you don't know Hebrew, having the RSV, which is a fairly literal rendering of the Hebrew, within sight helps. The Greek Psalms are very helpful to NT Greek learners since the vocabulary is pretty similar. The Psalms, because they were probably actually recited in Greek liturgy, are a more polished translation than say the Penteteuch or the Prophets. Yet they are fairly easy to translate, and this volume helps because they are printed in verse format broken down by synactical unit. The book is large but thin so feels good in your hand. You can even use it to pray in Greek or Hebrew! (though not in English because the English font is just as small as Brenton's.)

My only criticism is that the NET translation, following the NRSV, often changes singulars to plurals to avoid saying "he" and "him," which is confusing if you are trying to compare the Hebrew and the Greek. The RSV does not do this, so you have just in this one area a more literal rendering of the Hebrew than the Greek. I would hope in future editions that the NET be modified to eliminate this.

I also hope that Kohlenberger will offer similar volumes for the rest of the LXX. Well done!

Good scholarship, poor quality text  Oct 14, 2007
It's wonderful to see any new scholarship expressed in this area of study. But once again it is in a poorly produced book: glue-injected binding, semi-rough paper, cardboard "hardback" (where's the cloth?) and all this by the respected Oxford press...Just another book that won't hold up to heavy use and is not a delight to use. I've been too long out of seminary to comment on the Hebrew...I bought this just for the LXX...The actual printing is dark, crisp and consistent in inking, and the (Greek) fonts are fine. The introductory articles on the translation are helpful if limited...Folks this is the "dreaded LXX"...we could use more "helps" @ the foot of each page! Give us some help with unusual verb forms, vocabulary etc. Otherwise, well it's buying and then hauling out all those grammars like Smyth and lexicons like Liddell & Scott only to come up short... falling off to sleep dreaming of future-tense forms vs infinities vs .... The little work, so far I've done, Ps. 99 (LXX), the English translation seems to be in line with the Greek in "meaning". SO, with the price @ under $20 this is a good addition to one's library. Let's face it the quality of books will just keep getting worse as everything goes electronic.

ideal Psalter for students  Aug 10, 2007
With the Hebrew, Greek, and two English version in columns across two pages, this is an excellent Psalter for those students studying the Book of Psalms. Of course, to get the real value out of it, you need to have already learned some Hebrew and Greek.
