Product Description
Published early in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, of England, only five years after the death of the Roman Catholic Queen Mary, the work is an affirmation of the Protestant Reformation in England during the ongoing period of religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants. Since the English monarchs also asserted control over the Church in England, a change in rulers could change the legal status of religious practices. As a consequence, adherents of one religion risked judicial execution by the State depending on the attitudes of the rulers. During Mary's reign, common people of Christian faith were publicly burned at the stake in an attempt to eliminate dissension from Catholic doctrines. Foxe's account of Mary's reign and the martyrdoms that took place during it contributed very significantly to the belief in a distinction from the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope as a central aspect of English national identity. By compiling his record, Foxe intended to demonstrate a historical justification for the foundation of the Church of England as a contemporary embodiment of the true and faithful church, rather than as a newly established Christian denomination.

Not What It Pretends To Be  Nov 27, 2009
This book is not what it pretends to be. I expected an objective and historic account of Christian martyrs over the centuries. While it starts out that way - maybe that the piece actually written by Foxe - but it quickly devolves into the alleged atrocities committed by the Catholic Church after the initial Christian conversion of Europe. While there is no doubt that the Catholic Church committed its share of atrocities in the name of Jesus and should be rightly condemned, the book ultimately lacks balance. For example, the book covers more than 50 individual "persecutions" during the reign of the Catholic Queen Mary of England. Yet, there is almost no mention of the martyrdom of the well-known Saint Thomas More at the hands of King Henry VIII. This book is little more than a rant in the name of John Foxe. I would recommend trying something else.

disappointed  Nov 27, 2009
I was very disappointed. The editing for the book was horrible. It was hard to try and read, just because of this!

Foxes Book of Martyrs  Jun 3, 2009
Wonderful reading and history about the early church and the persecution they had to endure

A Classic  Oct 27, 2008
This is by no means a happy read, but it is motivating to see how deep the faith was of many who were martyred. One can derive strength from the unflagging believe of our brothers and sisters who kept the faith before us.

An outstanding work.  Jan 29, 2008
I am niether Catholic or Protestant as in my own experience I have been persecuted myself by both "Christian" movements for what I chose to believe.
I found Fox's book facinating not because it upheld one set of dogma against another but because there are some quite sustainable facts. I decided to examine one entry in great detail, because I happen to live 2 minutes away from where the martyrdom is said to have taken place.(Joan Waste who was burned at the stake in Derby)
What makes this account different to most others is because she was only 22 and blind and made her stand against Catholic teaching of "Transubstantiation" based on what she had had read to her from the Bible itself. Her story is substatiated from other local sources and interlocks with known local history.
Truly a fine example ,( not of upholding protestantisim ) but of upholding true Bible doctrine.
