| Very helpful exercises to use the book more concretely in your own life. I think it's a useful tool. | | | | The best! Apr 25, 2006 |
| This journal is like a mini workbook of great information, scriptures and Joel's down to earth look at our every day lives. I can hardly wait to get to the next day on this journal, once I have finsihed it I will go through and do it again. Everyone would benefit from this book, there is something pertaining to all of us in this journal. Highly recommended whether you are active in a religion now or just getting your feet back into your spirituality. | | | | Joel wrote a good book, but - - - Mar 5, 2006 |
I love Joel Osteen. He is the most positive, loving person imaginable, and I love his godly attitude; but I also have some problems with his vision of God. I could only give his book 3 stars.
Everything in life begins with attitude. It is a choice to be happy, to let the past go, and to commit to what God's word would have us do. Paul's epistles are replete with verses about running the race with perseverance, letting go of all bitterness, being anxious for nothing, thinking true and noble thoughts, and so it goes on. We should seek this godly attitude every day of our lives, though we get tired sometimes and fail to do so. Joel does a good job of encouraging us to rekindle our walk with the Lord by focusing on these things in faith.
The problem comes when he says we can 'activate the power of God' by our faith. This makes God into some kind of a puppet. Related to this is the false notion that our words and thoughts are what make good things happen, and that God is waiting to see what we do, so he can act. This simply does not point to the God of the Bible who declares the end from the beginning. He does not need us to accomplish His purposes, but chooses to involve us in His plans. Also, He answers according to His will, not just on how much faith we have. Job would not have gone through his trauma if it were simply a matter of faith. Paul, I'm sure, would have prayed his way out of scourgings and ship wrecks, as well as his 'thorn in the flesh', if it depended solely on faith. It's simply a mystery how our sovereign God works His will out, with or without our prayers.
I did like his idea of journaling our walk with the Lord. I think it is an excellent way of keeping track of our spiritual journey, and intend to start doing it.
This book is indeed a mixed blessing.
