Item Description... From the rivers and streams to the mighty ocean, God filled the Earth's waters with animals great and small. Upon His Word, enormous whales sprung into being. At His command, billions of plankton leapt to life. On that day, millions of creatures like the strapping sea turtles, the skulking sharks, the delightful dolphins, and the soaring squid gladly joined their fellow sea animals. How joyously crammed with excitement was the fifth day of earth's existence.
Apologia's newest elementary science book will take you and your family on an exploration into the wonders of the swimming creatures made on the fifth day of Creation. You'll begin with a big splash from the whales and dolphins, then spy on seals and meet manatees before swimming with the sea turtles, snakes, and salamanders. You'll even peek in on the primeval plesiosaraus and its pals.
Following your frolic with fish and sharks, you'll uncover the world of crabby crustaceans, sea snails, clams, and their soft bodied friends like the octopus, squid, and nautilus. You'll consort with corals, find flowers that devour plankton, see stars and feathers that walk, leap and roll, and discover dollars that disappear in the sand and sponges that clean more than you might think.
From the microscopic to massive, no stone is left unturned in your student's passage through the waters of the world. The creatures your student studies will come to life as your student creates replicas of them and adds them to his Ocean box - a miniature hand-crafted aquarium. As always, each lesson ends with an experiment or project reinforcing the scientific method and the concepts studied. Among other experiments and projects, your student will try on blubber, investigate a shark's ability to sense electrical currents, explore how whales can hear sounds that come from far away, and learn through experimentation which creatures make the best fossils. No matter how near or far you live from the ocean, you and your students will wonder at God's design in the amazing aquatic animals He formed and fashioned on the fifth day.

 | Exploring Creation with Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the 5th Day Sep 2, 2006 |
Using this book to teach science has brought joy to our home school. When I wake up on the mornings that we have Science class I am so excited. I can hardly wait to get the school day started so we can learn more about the world God created.
My degree is in Communication and I teach Literature to High School students. My weakness is Science. Never before have I learned so much about the field. I am no longer intimidated by Science.
This book is well written. It is organized in such a way that it flows as you read it. The conversational style lends it self easily to discussions with the children. When we leave a chapter we have real understanding of the subject covered, not just more knowledge. This I think is a mark of a good author and a book that leads a student to a well-educated mind.
The illustrations are beautiful and serve as excellent markers for the children as we go back to previous chapters reviewing the information to increase long term comprehension. They also hold the attention of younger students while you read and discuss more complicated ideas with the older students.
In my opinion this book could be successfully used to teach a kindergarten student as well as a 7th or 8th grader, requiring less and more homework from the respective students. If I did not home school my children I would still want it in my library. Not only has it taught my children, it teaches me.
The CD of notebook pages is an excellent resource. After the student has read and understood the concepts taught he can use the notebook pages to express his comprehension. These pages serve at least two purposes. He writes what he has learned which serves as an anchor in his memory and they become a personal science book for his records, an accomplishment he can be proud of in the future as he looks back on his elementary years.
I am not easily enamored with curriculum. If you want your child to really understand our world regarding the oceans, seas, and rivers and all that live in them this is the book for you. I give this one a 5 star rating. | | | Write your own review about Exploring Creation With Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the 5th Day
