" I am the good Shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine."John x. 14. The Church, having, last Sunday, set before us Christ in the greatest act of His resurrection-lifeHis benediction of His people, and His commission to His Churchthis day leads our minds up to one of the images, by which He describes His own supreme and perfect headshipa Shepherd. And you will have noticed how we travelled to it: through the epistle, taken from St. Peter, " For ye were as sheep going astray, but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls," up to the gospel of His own loving declaration, " I am the good Shepherd." We shall all agree that our Church could not have selected a better thought, to be the first to follow the resurrection; nor to-day a sweeter emblem into which to embody it. But I am struck with the peculiar way in which our Lord Himself uses His own illustration. He does not, as we generally do, take occasion, by the simile of " the The Sermon preached in the Evening, on "The Sympathy of Christ," can be obtained at the " Brighton Pulpit" Office. shepherd," to speak of feeding, guarding, and tending His people ; He confines Himself to two points in the analogy. One, the great, magnificent, solitary fact,that He " lays down His life for the sheep;"the other, knowledge, the mutual knowledge which there is between Him and those that are His. On these two points in the resemblance, He dwells exclusively; for, when He speaks of " going before His sheep," it is mainly to introduce the same idea.
