The Bridge... by Jackie Carpenter  Apr 23, 2010
This is a true story of Jason Veitch, a contractor who was the victim of theft of copper from several of his job sites, who then following the advice of a sheriff's deputy, "staked out" one of his job sites to try to catch the thieves. Unfortunately a man was accidentally killed by Jason, which started the worst 10 months of his life and the lives of his family and friends.

The author, his mother endured this time while leaning heavily on her faith which she shares with us in this heartbreaking story. Psalm 91 is pretty powerful and I am glad it gave her strength (see below).

I am a Christian who believes I am still on this earth after a horrid car accident in 2001, my own "miracle". I looked at this book from two sides, one from the Christian view point, where I know God's loving hands touch all things, but also from a secular viewpoint where I believe the defense attorneys did their job, presented the truth, and the jurors and judge did their jobs in finding the right verdict. The author's faith is genuine and I am not questioning that all, but it would have been a terrible injustice for the verdict to go any other way and would leave many questioning the system. I do believe that Jason was wrong to handle the situation the way he did, if he wanted to "stake out" his job site, I think he should have carried a camera instead of a gun and let the sheriff apprehend the criminals using the pictures as evidence. I feel he was very lucky to have escaped with his own life and not to receive any penalty for his actions. He put himself in a very dangerous position and would not encourage others to follow in his footsteps, they may not be as lucky.

While this is a very strong story topic and the mother's words compelling I feel the book was just okay. Some readers will love it, other will hate it. It left me feeling very conflicted.

Psalm 91
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. [a]
2 I will say [b] of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust."
3 Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you make the Most High your dwelling--
even the LORD, who is my refuge-
10 then no harm will befall you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him
and show him my salvation."

Inspirational!  Apr 12, 2010

The Bible records all of God's wonderful promises. Promises that provide hope, inspiration and encouragement to those who believe. Yet there are also some promises that may sound less than encouraging, such as John 16:33 where Jesus says: In this world you will have trouble. Not you might have trouble, but you will have trouble. So we should not be surprised when trouble comes our way. When Jackie Carpenter's son Jason was arrested and charged with felony murder, the truth of that verse hit her like a kick in the stomach. Yet, in the second half of that verse, Jesus says: But take heart. I have overcome the world. By clinging to the second half of that verse, she and her family were able to emerge victorious.
THE BRIDGE is written from the perspective of a Mother whose son has been falsely accused of murder by an unscrupulous deputy trying to avoid blame. She shares the daily process of their experiences with the courts and how things can go terribly wrong despite our usually efficient justice system. Like many of us that have never had occasion to be in court, Jackie and her husband Larry expected that the truth would prevail and would set their son free. They hadn't factored in a policeman lying or an Assistant District Attorney to put his own need for success above the law by prosecuting an innocent man. Quite an eye-opener for the uninitiated.
While there is plenty of mention of God and quotes from Psalms that clearly convey our daily struggles, Jackie Carpenter honestly expresses her fears and she is transparent about her need to renew her faith daily. When she begins looking at the years in prison that her son faces, of the possibility that her grandson will have to grow up without his father, that's when God answers her prayers for strength and courage. The Psalms became her source of hope because they supernaturally transcend time and can provide the same blessings as when they were written thousands of years ago.
If you've never read Psalm 91, it will bless you to do so. And, if anyone you know is struggling with the "trouble" that we've been promised, please consider sharing Jackie's story with him or her. You will be blessed.

A must read , if you believe or are in need of a MIRACLE now !  Mar 28, 2010

This book is truly an inspiration for me. I read it twice;the second time I highlighted key verses and sentences that I need to know going forward in life.

If your faith in God has waned for any reason, this book will renew your mind and spirit. As the author's Mentor requested, that she " move into, claim and live in the Book of Psalms" and that is what she did !. You should also know that Psalm 91 is powerful and effective;I try to read it every day now.

If you are Secular, this true story is your evidence ; the evidence of Faith and Miracles.
What happened in that courtroom could only be an Miracle from God.

A Miracle Claimed - An Undaunted Faith  Mar 28, 2010
Jackie Carpenter writes the story of her youngest son Jason Veitch's arrest for felony murder in the accidental death of a suspected burglar at his company's jobsite. The book details the anguish and despair of the ten months from Jason's arrest through to the outcome of the trial.

Step by step throughout the book Carpenter shares her testimony of hope and tells how she and the family claimed the promises found in Psalm 91. Confident that truth would be honored, Jackie was encouraged in her faith through her prayer closet experiences, the support and prayers of family and friends, and by claiming the promises from selected passages found in the Psalms.

Jason's story is compelling, fast moving, and clearly demonstrates the miracle power of God, the value of character, truth, and faith.

Jackie Carpenter's faith in her son and in her God is genuine. This comes through clearly in her writing. This is a book that will bring encouragement to anyone who has experienced an injustice in a like or similar circumstance. Heart wrenching and heart warming. A memorable reading experience.
