Reviews - What do our customers think?
Slower paced, but enjoyable  Jun 9, 2010
"Hurricanes in Paradise" is Christian women's fiction. Since I don't think like any of the women in this novel nor have I had male-female relationship troubles similar to theirs (abuse, an affair, a widow having trouble letting go, and depression combined with alcoholism), I didn't connect emotionally with them. If I had, I think I would have really liked this novel since the characters did (mostly) deal with realistic problems.

The author was very fond of using figures of speech and extensively describing every detail (significant or not) of every character's clothing, their "police line-up" appearance, and the details of the decor in every room of the resort. This created a slower pacing in the first 100 pages or so, but then it picked up.

The target audience seemed to be Christian women or women with a Christian background. The first part of the novel hardly had any references to God, but each woman in turn had a supernatural experience of emotional healing (including wind where there shouldn't be any, an actual conversation with God, and similar experiences) and then the praying and references to God became more frequent. The main theme was about forgiving yourself and facing your fears.

While the story was enjoyable enough once it got moving, I was left feeling a bit irritated at the author for something that happened at the end. It felt not-quite believable and wasn't necessary, so the ending didn't feel completely satisfying.

There were implied references to sex in the character's conversations, but no sex during the novel. The minimal bad language was of the "he cussed" style. Overall, I'd recommend this as clean reading.

I received this novel as a review copy from the publisher.

Luxury Vacation  Jun 9, 2010
Thank you to Vicky Lynch at Tyndale House for my review copy.

This fun novel is written in the third person voice of several of the female characters, which enabled this reader to see the various perspectives. I found myself fully engaged in the story line. I enjoyed meeting the characters, especially Winnie; the author sure knows how to write a Southern lady. I found the plot compelling. Because the setting is a five-star resort in the Bahamas, I envisioned myself enjoying a luxury vacation!

However, there were some weak spots, particularly in Chapter 16. I found the balcony scene implausible, and the church service a bit contrived. It read as if written by another hand. In addition, the sappy ending disappointed.

Nonetheless, I liked this story with its theme of friendships. Read it and decide for yourself.

Discussion question are included.

Friendship & Forgiveness | ThisMomsDelight.com  Jun 9, 2010
I thoroughly enjoyed the main characters in this book. From a young beauty pageant winner to a 70-something widow, I was laughing and crying along with them. Their story reflected the importance of friendships and forgiveness...

Friendships with other women and with God is a necessity in life.

Forgiveness asked of God, which He freely gives, and also forgiving one's ownself is a must!

I hope you enjoy the book as much as I do! To get started reading, pick up a copy here or from your favorite bookstore!

Happy reading!

heartfelt story that draws you in from page 1  Jun 8, 2010
I've read every book written by Denise Hildreth, and this one doesn't disappoint. I was drawn to the realistic characters from the first chapter, and I felt connected to them as they each faced their own hurricanes. Loved that it didn't have the "perfect" ending, but captured life in its truest form by allowing for hurricanes to keep on coming- like they do in real life.

If you liked any of her other books, you'll love this one too. I'm ready for the next one!!

All Hurricane Comes to an End  Jun 4, 2010
How important is friendship? I've always been taught that friends are able to make our lives more balanced and happy. "Hurricanes in Paradise" by Denise Hildreth is about four women, Laine, Winnie, Tamyra and Riley, who meet in the Bahamas during a vacation. Before their trip to the islands these women did not know one another. Their friendships are new and serendipitous. Perhaps, miraculous is the word. After all, the life journey of each one became less heavy after they met one another in Paradise.

Like in all friendships there is anger, misunderstandings, laughter, tears and the revealing of secrets. Behind all of these emotions is a "healing" of body and mind. The first person to mention a "healing" is Roy Rogers, a man who meets each woman at the airport. Who is Roy Rogers? I have my idea. You might have a different idea. I'll say he is an ethereal person.

While there are many emotional hurricanes going on in "Hurricanes in Paradise" by Denise Hildreth, there is laughter too. Winnie, the oldest one of the bunch, made me fall out laughing. From her swimming suit to a gown she is always wearing bright, earth shattering sequins. I especially loved the part where the ladies go out to swim with the dolphins. The dolphins only add to the beauty of the islands. These whistling giants also help us know another bit of Tamyra's history.

I've tried to pick my favorite character. It is impossible. I cried for each of these women. I grew angry with these women when they met jealousy with a face. I swooned with these women when good looking Christian came along. I breathed a sigh of relief when one mother came to the islands to hold her daughter's hand. I doubled over crying when one woman dropped to her knees after her fears came true.

In books some characters are forgettable. Other characters stay with you forever. These characters will live with me through each stormy day and on the sunny days too because there is always an end to a storm.
