Publishers Description
Henri Nouwen was a spiritual thinker with an unusual capacity to write about the life of Jesus and the love of God in ways that have inspired countless people to trust life more fully. Most widely read among the over 40 books Father Nouwen wrote is In the Name of Jesus. For a society that measures successful leadership in terms of the effectiveness of the individual, Father Nouwen offers a counter definition that is witnessed by a "communal and mutual experience." For Nouwen, leadership cannot function apart from the community. His wisdom is grounded in the foundation that we are a people "called." This beautiful guide to Christian Leadership is the rich fruit of Henri Nouwen's own journey as one of the most influential spirtiual leaders of the 20th century.

Power packed resource on church leadership  Feb 18, 2007
Nouwen's reflections are noteworthy. As a theologian this book speaks volumes about Christ-centered leadership from a pastor's perspective. On leadership I have not read a more concise and work on the nuts and bolts of servant-leadership.

As a Christian, I am convinced that if can master the concepts in this book I can truly be a vessel that glorifies the kingdom of God. I have used this book in training seminars for my two churches and the leaders have all thanked me for the helping them develop personally and spiritually.

I highly recommend any person who wants to take their ministry to the next level read this great book on how to maximize your god-given potential.

refreshing and continual reader!  Jan 21, 2007
Nouwen goes right at the heart of Christian Leadership today. I have read and re-read this book a number of times --- it will become a classic within my personal library!

With personal insights that are only capable by knowing himself well enough to make statements that are right on as it relates to the temptations of leaders, Nouwen gives hope to the future of Christian Leadership!

The heart of the issue--loving God and loving others  Jan 18, 2007
A book that will change you if read with an open heart. He speaks to the heart of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ and shows through his own story how easy it is to be busy doing Christian things while failing to simple love as Christ loves. EXCELLENT!!

my all-time favorite christian book  Jan 17, 2007
After twenty years as a professor at Notre Dame, Yale and Harvard, the Dutch Catholic priest Henri Nouwen (1932-1996) left academia to serve as a resident priest at a home for the mentally disabled called L'Arche. He wrote this tiny book (you could read it in one sitting) during that transition and explores the lessons he felt God was teaching him at that time. The book centers around the three temptations of Jesus, which Nouwen construes as the temptations to be relevant ("Turn these stones to bread."), to be spectacular ("Throw yourself from the temple."), and to be powerful ("I will give you the kingdoms of the world."). To each temptation there corresponds a spiritual discipline as a sort of antidote-- contemplative prayer, confession and forgiveness, and then theological reflection. Thus the three chapters move us from relevance to prayer, from popularity to ministry, and from leading to being led. I have read a dozen or more of Nouwen's 40 books, but I have always found this one to be his most powerful one. I have read it five or six times, and am still amazed at its power to fundamentally rearrange the furniture of your Christian life.

Excellent glimpse into Christ's model for leadership  Nov 11, 2006
This book is on a required reading list for ministerial licensing in my state. I found it a refreshing look into real Christian leadership (seemingly free from methods and techniques encouraged by the world). I say 'refreshing' because so many leadership books send out a 'drill sergeant' message that 'You need to toughen up for leadership. It isn't a cake-walk... You do a lot alone, etc. etc.' That may be true, but it can almost be discouraging/ disheartening for those interested in learning about leadership.

NOT SO with this book. The author is a humble man of God who only desires to walk closer with Him. He (author) approaches leadership from a Divine angle; that is, he doesn't see leadership as the exercise of power and authority for its own sake. He sees leadership as that quality one gets from simply walking with Christ in close fellowship, to the point of being what he calls 'a mystic'. He encourages us to take those quiet walks with God; get to know His heart, and only then... be qualified to lead others with a servant's heart. He encourages us to be transparent and not to seek to do this alone (contrary to the messages this world sends us). To do this he shares engaging stories from his own life - stories of tough lessons he had to learn about becoming a Christian leader. God taught him through these life experiences more accurately what it means to be a leader, and I found myself identifying with him.

I found this book on leadership to be a great encouragement to just walk closely with God - and that's what it's all about!
