Book 4 in the O'Malley Series follows Jack, the Chicago Firefighter. He is in pursuit of a serial arsonist. Jack's friend and former firefighter, Cassie, has rejoined the department to help catch the bad guy and keep Jack safe. This novel also showcases Jack's boss, Cole, who has a thing for Jack's sister, Rachel.
Each O'Malley novel reveals an obstacle to faith in Christ that is eventually overcome. Jack's struggle is with general acceptance of the accuracy of Christ's sacrifice and that He could possibly be alive. The family continues to struggle with Jennifer's cancer, as well. There is a great deal of suspense surrounding the identification and capture of the serial arsonist. The romantic undertones concentrate on the development of relationships between Jack and Cassie and Cole and Rachel without the couples finding themselves in many romantic situations.
The O'Malley Series Contains: The Negotiator, The Guardian, The Truth Seeker, The Protector, The Healer, The Rescuer. Each story is faithful to the concept of believers in Christ being united with other believers. In each book, the inner struggle of the Christian is told as they long for the one they love to come to the Lord.

| The Protector is by the most well-developed book (up to this point) in the series. The plot is intricate and interesting while the characters are more three dimensional. As with all the O'Malley books, the central theme of bringing an O'Malley to Christianity is handled without being over the top or overbearing. My main problem with the book is that Henderson spends little time with the "protector," Jack O'Malley. More thought and development is put into the supporting players such as Cassie and Cole, and with Rachel O'Malley than with Jack. Of all the O'Malleys to this point, he is the least developed sibling. Other than that quibble, the book overall is very good. Often times Christian fiction can be extremly heavy handed with the faith-based side of the plot or, as is more often the case, very implausible (the Left Behind series comes to mind), but Henderson is good at injecting faith into just the right moment and while sometimes I think her lapsed Christians return to the faith a little too easily, it's very good reading. | | | | Book 4 of the O'Malley series Nov 18, 2005 |
An arsonist is at work.

| I actually picked up this book in my church library. While, I'm wary of christian romances, this one caught my eye. And I loved it! Dee Henderson's writing style is fun and her charachters are okay. She deals much more honestly with the realities of the world then other romance novels. Having read almost all of her books now though, I have to say that they are dangerous for young women. Every book is a romance with God playing a distant second to the man and woman who are falling in love. In all of them that I've read, the formula is exactly the same. Man or Woman of God meets Woman or Man who is not a Christian with a personal battle to overcome. Get them together through some sort of danger fall in love. Even before the non-christian converts though, while the christian is saying that they can't date them, they still kiss and pursue each other. This teaches young women 1. That it's good to pursue a non-christian-after all maybe you'll convert them. 2. That physical reletionships are okay with non-christians, even if you can't date them. 3. That a non-christian will inevitably fall in love with Jesus if you want them to. I'm going to ask my church to remove it from our library. A great alternative is Shaunti Feldhaun's two novels The Veritas Conflict, and the Lights of Tenth Street. | | | Write your own review about Protector (OMalley V4)
