	A Beautiful Sequel to "Courting Trouble"  Nov 7, 2009
DeeAnn Gist has won my heart once again with her novel "Deep In The Heart Of Trouble". All I have to do is see this author's name on the spine of a book and it becomes mystically attached to my hand until I've placed it on the checkout counter to pay for it! It's taken me a while to pull this novel off of my shelf at home, though. I think it's because I was having a difficult time with the lead character's name - Essie Spreckelmeyer. But there was something familiar about it. It is quite a mouthful, and I sometimes trip in my reading when there's a very long name in the text. This happens to many of us when we try to read several Old Testament passages. Doesn't it? But that very name has added another charming dimension to this thoroughly satisfying read! Then, I remembered why Essie's name was familiar to me. Having read "Courting Trouble", I was already familiar with her! Anyway, I've barely begun reading this story of Essie and her father, Judge Spreckelmeyer, who own Sullivan Oil in Corsicana, Texas, and I am thoroughly engrossed in this story. Tony comes to Sullivan Oil from Beaumont, Texas with apparently no field experience in the oil business, but many wonderful ideas because of his years spent in the back office of Morgan Oil. What the Spreckelmeyers don't know is that Tony is the disinherited son of Morgan Oil's founder. When the Morgan patriarch dies leaving Tony with not even a roof over his head, the young Morgan changes his name and seeks make a name for himself some other way. This story is full of strong characters, incredibly crafted visuals and a well-plotted dramatic storyline, laced with humor and romance. It is a wonderful way to spend a long lazy weekend in a hammock or in a favorite chair in front of a fire. Set yourself up to read this book with minimal interruptions as you will not want to put it down once you've picked it up.

My that Essie Spreckelmeyer is a character! If you like strong willed, adventuresome Christian heroines this book is for you. Tony Morgan is just the man to tame her and they are definitely a equally yoked team. The relationship each of them has with the parents is different and makes them unique and ties together in a great story line. Oil Barons, bloomers, bicycles and blondes....enjoyed it just as much on the second read. Appreciated Essie's foibles and loved the happy ending.

To be honest with you up front, I haven't read this book myself... BUT... My wife and two of her sisters have read it and they were absolutely unanimous in their review of it: "It was so good I couldn't put it down and I didn't want it to end." There are very few books that my wife reads about which she could honestly say, "I didn't want it to end" so it says so much about the quality of writing and story in this book that I decided I should tell the world!

Deep in the Heart of Trouble is a funny, charming, very enjoyable historical romance set in Texas during the 1890's. The two main characters are Essie Spreckelmeyer, a spunky, strong willed, intelligent woman who rides around town on a bicycle wearing bloomers to the disapproval of the townsfolk; and Tony, a disinherited rich man's son who is determined to make his own fortune in the oil business. He changes his name and decides to start from the bottom up by getting a field worker's job at Essie's father's oil company. Essie and Tony butt heads at once and sparks fly, which of course means they have feelings for one another and eventually fall in love. Many conflicts though threaten to tear them apart, not least of which is a dark secret from Essie's past. This was a wonderful book, with a heroine that is independent, outgoing, devout, eccentric, and incredibly lovable. Essie is definitely a one-of-a-kind heroine! Tony is also a great character; very likable and a good foil for Essie. The supporting characters are also well written and colorful, especially the eccentric Mrs. Lockhart who is always quoting from her favorite romance novels. This book is a sequel to the book 'Courting Trouble' but can be easily read without reading its prequel. It's a sweet, compelling, fun read and I definitely recommend it.

I have to admit I was not overly excited to start this book after reading the first ...don't get me wrong the first book was good just not absolutely fabulous ... but I wanted to finish Essie's story ... which I felt was incomplete at the end of the last book "Courting Trouble". I was delighted at how good this book really was ... and how pleased I was that I read these two books when I finished reading this book. Where she was a bit unbelievable she was cute enough to make it worth your while to read ... a very enjoyable book!
