Every year, my husband and I get a new devotional to use together. This has been one of the most lackluster.
First off, the editor was clearly lazy, as the writing is clumsy and the discussion questions are vague.
My biggest issue with this book is how the whole thing revolves around us, us, us-- other devotionals include entries on a variety of subjects, like parenting, your ministry, etc. This book ignores the need for married couples to also be people and instead focuses solely on the marriage relationship. That sounds good, except for the fact that everything in your life affects that relationship-- you're not just a wife or husband in isolation. A little more awareness of that would have been welcome.
I also wish there had been more Bible passages, but that's not a flaw unique to this book.
However, as there are so few couples' devotionals on the market (at least compared to how long we're hoping to be married!) we'll be finishing out the year with this one, and grateful to have it. | | |  | Perfect Feb 22, 2010 |
This is one of the best devotionals I have come across hands down. I have been searching all over for one that was easy to understand, not "preachy", and did not shove bible verses at you. This has been perfect for my husband and I since, due to our work schedules, we do not get to church often. We found that this fell into our belief system (Episcopal)and followed the cadence of our sermons at church.
Each week is about a different aspect of the relationship, and each day explores the idea in greater depth (for instance, the first week is about Acceptance and looks at this from many different perspectives).
There are bits of scripture in each devotion, and when my husband and I find one that is rather thought-producing, we look it up to see the context. There are some days that a devotion will "hit us where it hurts" making us see failings in ourselves, and other days where we feel so happy that we don't have the stated problem.
I would recommend the devotion for couples who are not into "bible quoting"...I don't mean to offend anyone by that statement. We were just raised in a church where the thoughts that are produced by scripture is the focus point, not the words themselves in all cases.
