Overview
Shocked to see her own face on a missing child advertisement, June Bug sets out on a cross-country journey to discover the truth about the beloved father who has raised her and the mother he rarely speaks about.

Publishers Description
June Bug believed everything her daddy told her. That is, until she walked into Wal-Mart and saw her face on a list of missing children. The discovery begins a quest for the truth about her father, the mother he rarely speaks about, and ultimately herself. A modern interpretation of "Les Miserables," the story follows a dilapidated RV rambling cross-country with June Bug and her father, a man running from a haunted past. Forces beyond their control draw them back to Dogwood, West Virginia, down a winding path that will change their lives forever.

Wonderful Literary Fiction  May 4, 2010
When I started this book, I honestly had no idea what to expect. The majority of male authors that I read tend to fall in the suspense/thriller genre. I'm not a big Nicholas Sparks fan so I was worried that this book would turn out like that. I was so glad I was wrong. This book is really part of the literary fiction genre and tells a wonderful story that brings to life vivid characters and an intriguing storyline.

The book is told mainly from the view point of June Bug, who has just discovered that her entire life has been a lie. She is quite young at nine years old, but way mature beyond her years. Before you get up in arms, this is not a children's book at all. June Bug is someone who has seen more things in life than most adults ever will. There is nothing childish about her though there are some childlike experiences that she longs for. The book also switches to third person point of view and focuses on some of the main characters but it's not confusing at all. There are breaks that indicate when the switch happens so the reader won't get lost.

Reading about her mother made me think of other stories in the news where women decide that their lives would be best if their children got out of the way. It is sad that some people are like this and think only about themselves and consider hurting their own child so they can have "freedom." It pains me because there are so many people who do want children and are unable to have them, yet the people who don't want children keep having them. The other characters in the book are just as thought provoking, each having a story behind what is already shown about them.

The book is described as a modern version of Les Miserables. I could see the similarities but if you're really looking for an adaptation, you're not going to find it. I think the story holds up well on its own. There does seem to be a lot of product placement for Walmart but it is essential to the story. The ending doesn't play out the way I wish it had. In fact, it's rather quite sad in my opinion but I can accept it. The only other qualm I had was with the grandmother. Even though her intentions are good, she seemed to be a little legalistic in her views. I was a little annoyed that she deemed the King James Version to be THE only version of the Bible.

Overall though, this is a beautifully written story that really pulls the reader into the novel. This is my first adult fiction book from Fabry (I had read the Left Behind Kids series that he helped to cowrite) and I enjoyed it immensely. I'm looking forward to going back and reading his first adult book, Dogwood, and will be on the lookout for any future offerings from him.

Pure Southern fiction at it's finest!  Mar 23, 2010
June Bug, what can I say? What a wonderful, blessed read. I dove right into this book. June Bug lives with her dad in an RV, going all over the country, stopping in Wal-Marts along the way to stay in the parking lot. However, in Colorado they are waiting for a part that seems to take forever. The Wal-Mart manager says they have to move it. So a young wonderful woman named Sheila offers her space in her driveway. What is on June Bug's mind though is a poster of herself she assumes on a missing child board. So is this really her dad? Are their people out there looking for me? All these questions she has.

June Bug has never lived in a regular house, never had a mom that she can remember -- all the things we take for granted. Then the part comes in. It gets really interesting from here.

The writing was pure Southern and absolutely divine! June Bug will find a place in your heart -- Chris Fabry is a wonderful, blessed author! I can't wait to check out Dogwood and his future writings.

June Bug a wonderful story  Mar 18, 2010
This book is wonderful. It is written in a way that you never want to put it down. You always want to know what is going to happen next. I emailed the author from his website and had a response with him within 10 minutes. Chris Fabry is a wonderful writer and a wonderful person. I am so looking forward to the sequal Almost Heaven. My mother became a fan after reading only a few pages. Everyone should read this book. Better yet, go to his website and get your copy signed by the author. These books make excellent gifts when signed by the author. My mother was thrilled to get these keepsakes.

Very Powerful Story  Mar 15, 2010
This book literally left me speechless after I turned the final page. Tears were streaming down my face, which is a rarity for me with any novel. This book had such a tenderness to it, particularly with the love that a father has for a daughter. That struck a chord with me since I am so close to my father, and as a girl, looked up to him for everything. But it also dealt with the harsh realities of life, and how, despite the best-made plans, things just don't always turn out the way people want them to.

I loved the connections to Les Miserables. Knowing that there were similarities in the storylines, I was a little bit impatient for things to play out like I knew they did in Les Mis. Instead, the author just gave a little morsel every now and then, and before too long, I realized that he was retelling only part of the story of Les Mis, and sometimes, not sharing details as they happened, but rather in retrospect. This may make the story sound unappealing, but trust me, when those connections with Les Mis occurred, it was oh-so-powerful.

Trust me on this one thing....if you're looking for a book that is lyrical in it's storytelling, and one that will resonate with you long after you've finished it, then you can't go wrong with reading June Bug. I am soooo eager now to go back and read Chris' first book, Dogwood. If it's anything like June Bug, then I doubt I'll be disappointed at all. June Bug has earned a spot on my favorite books list, for sure.

A flat story with a disappointing ending  Feb 19, 2010
I purchased this book after I read Dogwood which I thought was a beautiful story with so much depth and meaning. I was hoping for the same thing with June Bug but this book can't compare to Dogwood. I was fooled by what previous readers wrote for their reviews, and I am still wondering what made them think this book rates as 4 stars!!
First of all the characters are flat, weak and have no demention to them. Fabry gave vague and dull insights into the stories behind some of the characters which made the reader have to come up with their own conclusions. How did some of the characters end up the way they did? I kept hoping for something to be revealed in a touching and heartfelt way. Never happened-- not even with any flashbacks!! How does a man take care of a small child for so many years, in an RV for that matter, traveling all over the USA without something intense or revealing happening? No one every became suspicious?? How does such an intense and devoted grandmother not delve deeper into understanding the disappearance of her grandchild especially if she was being raised by a "dead beat", druggie mother who happens to be her own daughter? Why wasn't she suspicious enough to fight harder to find more out by insisting with the law??
Second, most of the story was so unbelievable and lame. It was even on the verge of being ridiculous. The book starts out with June Bug seeing herself on a Child Missing poster in a Walmart. She is camping out in their broken down RV with her Dad in the parking lot for several days waiting for a part to come in to fix it. June Bug then goes in and out of the store and even becomes friendly with one of the workers. You mean to tell me that no one happens to recognize her in the poster--- not even her Dad or the employee of Walmart?? But only June Bug sees herself.
Next, it was tedious to have to read the long and drawn out ramblings of a little girl describing most of the events in the story. Half the time I had to skip through it just to keep my interest going.
Lastly, I kept hoping for this big climax for the ending, but it just fell flat on its face. The reader is left wondering so many things that weren't answered. It made me feel like I wasted my time plowing through the pages for nothing. Dogwood had such a deep and meaningful ending but June Bug's ending was nothing but a dead, squashed BUG!!!!!!!
