Overview
In the small town of Dogwood, West Virginia, Karin has buried her shattered dreams by settling for a faithful husband whose emotional distance from her deep passions and conflicts leaves her isolated. Loaded with guilt, she tries to raise three small children and "do life" the best she can. Will returns to Dogwood intent on pursuing the only woman he has ever loved--only to find there is far more standing in his way than lost years in prison. The secrets of Will and Karin's past begin to emerge through Danny Boyd, a young boy who wishes he hadn't survived the tragedy that knit those two together as well as tore them apart. The trigger that will lay their pain bare and force them to face it rather than flee is the unlikely figure of Ruthie Bowles, a withered, wiry old woman who leads Karin so deep into her anger against God that it forces unexpected consequences

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A real snooze-fest  May 26, 2010
I'm on page 162 and so far there has been no action, no intrigue, just one guy getting out of prison and a woman who cannot sleep at night. If this excites you, then by all means read this book. It is also fairly preachy, a lot of talk about what God wants you to do with your life. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

amazing story of sacrificial love  May 25, 2010
Wow! A very well-written story told from the viewpoint of several different characters. It illustrates how different events affect people differently and also how we can create scenarios in our own minds in an effort to help us keep from confronting truth...but God who loves us so much won't let us hide for long...

Dogwood is a dog  Mar 30, 2010
This book came so highly recommended by your reviews and turned out to be such a disappointment ! Chris Fabry was totally unknown to me, I fell for it and wasted my money. I would never recommend it nor read it again.
Structurally alone, this is the kind of book which I dislike, as it has many short chapters written from the perspective of the main characters of the story, and headed by their various names, at different points in time, past and present, which initially leads to some confusion of the reader, as you don't know who is who and what their relationships are......I found this highly irritating. The short chapters however, make for quick reading.
The content however, is even more irritating. ...it is a very highly implausible story, essentially a soap opera with fake people in Dogwood, West Virginia. The attraction of the 'protagonist' Will, before he goes to the penitentiary, and also afterwards, to the slutty harpy Karin, is totally unbelievable. Why in the world would he be attracted to such a pushy, contriving, scheming, taunting hussy like her, and keep that love in his heart through 12 years of incarceration, remains a mystery, since he is such an 'upright character' . She was never ever kind to him, only devious. Other characters are stereotypes and obnoxious too, such as the 'groping' sister-in-law, the brother is an idiot, and not believable, even the old woman is unreal as a 'pseudo analist' and extremely irritating and finally the policeman, who is the 'law gone bad'.....the mother's initial characterization followed by such a metamorphosis also is silly, as well as her new relationship with the judge widower...
.......sometimes one has hopes that the book might get better, when he writes of the relationship of Will and his father, and the beauty of West Virginia, but that is about it.........one guesses eventually what must have happened in reality between Karin and Will, but I did not expect the totally twisted contrived ending, which was cornball to the power of ten.
I also do not like his style of writing. He is too wordy and the characters often think flip gratuitous remarks, that don't fit in. The story was maudlin and preachy.

Dogwood is a MUST read!!  Nov 11, 2009
I absolutely LOVED this book! There are so many twists and turns. Once I got started I couldn't put it down. The characters were so compelling and captured my heart and the story kept me glued to the book until the end! I highly recommend this book!

great Character study  Nov 1, 2009
Chris is writing for adults and I enjoyed his children's books. He is good at showing with great detail where indiviuals have come from to be who they are today....
I know nothing of West VA and he shows that they are people just like where I come from and have the same problems and yet the answer is found in the same place God and His Word.
