| I have used ESV since it came out a few years ago. The translation is excellent. I was forced to get large print recently for my 50 year old eyes. In the past I've used a calfskin regular print, but I did not want to spend that kind of money on a large. I'm pleased with the clarity of the type, definitely easier to read - I can see it without my glasses. The cover on this Bible is inexpensive, and I do not expect it to last more than a few years at most. But it was worth the price. I'm a little surprised no one has reviewed the ESV large-print Bible in the new brown Tru-Tone binding . . .
This is a black-letter edition (i.e., the words of Christ in the New Testament are not printed in red). There are no center-column references, and footnotes are limited to either textual comments or New Testament citations of Old Testament verses. There is a basic concordance, and a basic set of maps bound at the end.
The printing in this new edition is very consistent and clear. I have not found any pages where the print is too light, where there is ghosting or shadowing of letters, or where the ink has been smeared. It's a very even, professional printing job. The paper is normal Bible paper, easy to handle, and has minimal show-through.
As far as I can tell, this edition has a sewn rather than glued binding. While I haven't been able to actually see any thread, the signatures cluster together as if they're sewn, and when the Bible is open there are slight pucker marks in the gutter that look like the location of stitches.
The brown tru-tone cover is excellent! Unlike some other tru-tone bindings which are fairly shiny, this cover has a matte finish. The binding material is a good thickness, and it's very flexible. It feels much like a high-quality leather binding. The front and back linings are paper--it's like the pale brown "parchment" paper that's sometimes used for calligraphy. I would have preferred a solid color paper, but it's really not a problem.
Overall I'm very happy with this new edition of the ESV . . . Crossway has done an excellent job producing a high-quality large print Bible in a great binding. | | | Write your own review about ESV Large Print Bible-Brown TruTone
