If you are looking for a great book to amp up the effectiveness of your prayer life, I highly recommend reading Dave Earley's book Prayer: The Timeless Secret of High-Impact Leaders. Here's a brief summary of what to expect:
Dave Earley's book, Prayer: The Timeless Secret of High-Impact Leaders, presents a plethora of practical, biblically grounded insights, best practices, and recommendations for Christian believers / leaders. Throughout the book, Earley lays out the foundation and rationale for pursuing an effective prayer life and, thus, leaves readers convinced that there is "no spiritual tool [sic] as significant or powerful as prayer."
As spiritual leaders, free time is typically a luxury that is hard to come by. Nonetheless, Earley provides examples from the lives of our preceding spiritual leaders (e.g., Wesley, Calvin, Luther) that prove we are, in fact, too busy not to pray. For the readers that perhaps do not know where to begin, Earley provides a series of recommendations based upon the effective prayer lives of our Lord and others. From topics such as choosing an ideal location to pray...to the model of an effective prayer (e.g., A.C.T.S. model derived from the Lord's Prayer), Earley leaves little room for question in the minds of his readers.

Like leadership in the secular world, spiritual leaders are expected to lead their flocks toward a goal (i.e., life eternal). As such, they are expected to think bigger and be proactive in the advancement of the group. The exhortation to possess a bold faith, turn problems into prayers / petitions, and to ask the Lord to deliver big and specific results are just a few of the mechanisms presented by Earley to fulfill our individual and leadership roles.
As evidenced by the content within Earley's book, the spiritual leaders of the past have provided those of the present an arsenal of practical tools to enhance the effectiveness of their prayer lives. Earley's book contains most, if not all, of the fundamentals needed to succeed in sharpening prayer. Dave Earley in "Prayer: The Timeless Secret of High-Impact Leaders" has identified nine prayer disciplines found in the lives of over seventy leaders, including examples from the Old and New Testaments as well as Christian leaders from the past and present.
Each chapter includes application questions, worksheets and guidelines to help the reader "focus, stretch, rekindle, and renew" their prayer life. David also includes anecdotes and quotes found in their writings and in their biographies. Biblical leaders include lessons from Gideon, Daniel, David, Peter, and Paul.
Augustine, John Bunyan, John Calvin and Jonathan Edwards are classic examples of men of prayer quoted throughout the book. Henry Blackaby, Billy Graham, Jack Hayford, and Charles Swindoll are representative of the more contemporary prayer warriors included.
I found the chapter entitled "Build on the Basics" particularly beneficial. As the title suggests the many elements of prayer were included. The suggestions for "applying" make this a valuable tool to return to often while rediscovering the truth of Oswald Sanders observation, "Prayer influences men by influencing God to influence them."
Dave is articulate and a skilled communicator. I appreciated the natural flow of his writing. Whether drawing attention to an important scripture passage, a powerful quotation, or when drawing an illustration from his experience I found myself engaged in the application. The final chapter includes: prayer life lessons, a prayer life inventory, a prayer life assessment, a prayer life application, and a prayer life goal.
Dave Earley's writing conveys a genuine and intimate relationship with the Savior and a heart concern for motivating Christian leaders to "pray more fervently, more frequently, more effectively, and more contagiously than ever before." This is a book for high-impact leaders at every level of ministry and influence
