Best marriage devotional we have read  Dec 30, 2009
This devotional is by far the best we have read, and we read a devotional every night together (for the past 5 years). We read Night Light first and none of them since have come close to inspiring conversation like Jame's Dobson's book did. I would recommend it to anyone.

Great for Couples--New or Not  Dec 12, 2009
I purchased this book when we were married 8 years ago, but we didn't read it until recently. I can honestly say that I'll be sad when we finish it and I was hoping that there was a second book.

After reading the long review on this page that had some negative comments, I do not agree. It may be a little weak on the theological side. It's not a Bible study. A friend wanted to do a Bible study with her husband and was interested in this book. That's not the purpose. It makes the assumption that the person reading it is already a strong Christian with a good knowledge of Biblical concepts. The main purpose is to get couples thinking about many aspects of marriage and how they can be improved. It is also designed to get couples to communicate more, which is why there are open-ended discussion questions. I personally appreciate those kinds of questions and don't always want objective questions and answers. It's definitely thought-provoking.

As far as putting self third, I do think that is a Biblical concept. Jesus instructed his disciples to serve others, which is why he demonstrated the example of washing the disciples feet. I'm not saying to be a door mat and neglect caring for yourself, but many relationships would improve greatly with that attitude. As sinful people we are too prone to putting ourselves first.

I also don't agree with the other review when it mentions the role of men and women. My husband and I are fairly young and I have not felt that it suggests we should live in another era. There are differences between men and women that exist regardless of time. Examples of women in the book are more likely to be stay-at-home moms, but there are many women today who have chosen that role. I was a working woman for years and have chosen that role. I don't feel it is offensive to women who have chosen to be working moms.

This book is extremely helpful to all couples because we are all sinful human beings who are bound to run into problems in our relationships. I especially like that it will specifically address the husband or the wife on how to be more encouraging and loving to the other spouse. Sometimes it's difficult to say it to a spouse, so it's nice that the book does it. Again, we read this after 8 years of marriage, so I recommend it to couples at any stage. It may possibly be even better for those who have been married longer and have experienced many of the issues covered in the book.

Quick but Deep  Dec 4, 2009
My husband and I are just finishing this devotional for the second time. It doesn't take long (5-10 minutes) to do a day's devotional using this book, but the stories, commentary, and questions really pack a punch - rarely too intense, but just enough to help keep a couple on track spiritually and relationally.

The first time we went through this, we were newlyweds and didn't get much out of it (probably wouldn't have gotten much out of any couples' devotional), as everything was still new and "perfect" in our relationship - we didn't have much to discuss. The second time around, it's been very meaningful discussion because we've been married 9 years and have weathered some storms and have kids.

Night Light  Nov 30, 2009
This devotional is amazing!! Whether you are married or considering marriage it will definitely enhance and challenge your relationship. You grow closer to eachother and truly see and understand the Lord's plan for your relationship. The topics are extremely relevant and the time each day to do it is about 10-15 minutes so it's a perfect way to end the day.

Devo for couples  Oct 8, 2009
Great devotional for couples - highly recommended for use within the first 1-2 years of marriage. I & my husband started this devotional a couple of days after our wedding, and have absolutely loved it! The questions stimulate great conversation on various practical & spiritual matters many couples face; I even feel our discussions have helped us draw closer to each other & to God (as a couple rather than individually). Again, highly recommended devotional for newly weds...even beyond the first 2 years of marriage, I feel all Christian couples will benefit from going over most of the sessions together.
