Battling depression, denial, and an irrational fear of darkness, Rob travels to the small town of Mayfield, MD to check out a house he has inherited from his great aunt Wilda, a woman he has never even met. There in Mayfield strange things begin to happen that lead Rob to believe his son, Jimmy, is not really dead. After a restless night and eerie dream, Rob is convinced the answer to the mystery surrounding Jimmy's disappearance and alleged death is to be found in a village called Darlington, a town found on no map. Teaming up with a quirky local waitress who insists she has been there, Shields begins his quest to find the truth about the town--and his son. In Darlington, Rob and Juli come face to face with the town's secret, creatures called Darklings inhabit the night and instill paralyzing fear in Darlington's citizens. Their search for Jimmy leads them into the woods surrounding Darlington where, once in, there seems to be no way out.

Christian thriller keeps reader guessing  May 18, 2010
Darlington Woods by Mike Dellosso is another arrow in the author's growing quiver of stellar horror fiction. Rob Shields is still trying to recover from the brutal murders of his wife Kelley and son Jimmy when he is called to a small town in Maryland to claim a house left to him by a great-aunt he never met. Once there, the images and instinct that Jimmy is still alive become so real that he must follow them wherever they lead, even to the forgotten town of Darlington. So tiny it doesn't even exist on maps, and the locals refuse to give him directions until a young waitress named Juli steps up and agrees to help him find the town, because she knows that this is her calling. Dellosso is second to none in his descriptions of scary beasts as well as creating a slowly tightening noose of suspense around the reader. I wish that this book had about 100 more pages. There were some aspects of the plot that seemed rushed. When Rob admits to a phobia about the dark, it was a stunning admission because there is no previous foreshadowing of this major plot point. However, in describing how people are changed by fear and how it can rule a life, the story excels. Darlington Woods is definitely a pulse-pounding thriller, it just needed more development of the backstory.

Awesome thriller! But Be Aware....Don't go in the woods!!!  May 18, 2010
Open to the first page and you'll be amazed. Amazed by the immediate sense of fear and creepiness that engulfs you. Mike Dellosso takes us on an awesome roller-coaster of emotions: fear, trepidation, trust, spiritual tests, and love for family. Wow!

Dellosso has awesome writing skills. I say that because he can create a suspenseful thriller and combine it with a lesson in overcoming your deepest fears with God in control and produce a spine-chilling and heart gripping story. Page after page of chills brought me deeper into the story and didn't let me go til the end....which, by the way, was a total shocker!!!! In between the fear and chills, Dellosso added characters like Rob Sheilds and Juli who are unforgettable. Amazingly done. On top of all this amazing work, Dellosso writes in 4 people's points of view but doesn't do it in a crazy confusing way. Love his techniques!

I sat down to read this as a new comer to Mike Dellosso's works. I've always heard great things about his work, though, and was truly glad to have the chance to read Darlington Woods. Blood-pumping, sweat-breaking fear with amazing spiritual guidance will have you feeling like your watching a new horror movie (just cleaner, of course!). So, if you have a deep fear you've overcome, or have one that you want to overcome, I highly suggest you read Darlington Woods. The message of light overcoming the darkness (evil verses good) is POWERFUL.

But be warned...this 5 star book should NOT be read at night! Oh, and beware of dark woods.....

Suspenseful tale of a REAL enemy!  May 15, 2010
I would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to Mike Dellosso and his publisher for sending me a copy of "Darlington Woods" to review for them. I have always been grateful for this generosity, and I am trying to improve at being consistent in taking the time to thank these wonderfully giving individuals in a public forum. I really appreciate your time, effort and expense in making a reviewer copy available to me.

Mike Delosso's "Darlington Woods" will steal your breath! A devastating loss leads Rob Shields to seek escape from his normal life to check out a piece of property he inherited from his Great-Aunt Wilda. The puzzling place is located in a small town with odd, nosey inhabitants. Tension builds as mysterious happenings make Rob (and the reader) question his sanity - but what if his son, Jimmy, is still alive? The plot twists and turns, oscillating the reader between hope and horror right to the end.

Even though I figured the mystery out early on, I was thoroughly riveted by the writing. The reason Delosso is able to scare so well is that his villain is absolutely real! Thankfully, even though this is a work of fiction, the author does a terrific job of telling the reader how to defeat this enemy that we all face: fear. Thank you, Mike, for writing an entertaining and engaging story that also has the power to educate.

A Frightening Tale Filled with TRUTH!  May 13, 2010
"There was no light in Darlington. Maybe there was at one time, but that time had long passed. Darkness ruled here now. All kinds of darkness." p 63

Rob Shields is a man who has suffered great loss. His wife and child were ripped from his life, and now, hope against hope, it seems his son has found a way to call to him from that dark place to which he has vanished. Desperate to find and rescue his son, Rob sets out upon a journey - a journey to leave this life and join his wife and child. What Rob could never have imagined is that he would find himself amid a town and a people that were ruled by a horror and loss far greater than his own. When he meets a dark-eyed stranger in the local restaurant, Rob finds his spirit called to a place he's never heard of before - Darlington.

Providence introduces Rob to someone else in the local diner, someone who knows about Darlington and someone who has been directed by God to intercede for Rob. Juli is a young waitress at the diner, and she exudes a peace and grace that immediately appeals to Rob. She also harbors an unnatural dislike for the stranger with the dark eyes. When Rob decides to go to Darlington, no matter the cost, no matter the danger, Juli is right there by his side. Neither of them are certain why they must face the coming battle together, but as they journey into the ever darkening woods of Darlington, it becomes abundantly clear that they are searching for the Light that dispels all darkness. As Juli intercedes, Rob must fight for his life as never before. Will either of them survive?

Approaching this book, knowing it was written during Mike Delloso's battle with cancer, set my mind upon an analogous journey. Each sentence seemed to take on a double meaning, and the more I read, the more I felt like I was living inside the author's heart and mind as he battled for his life throughout cancer surgery and treatment. Perhaps that was intended. Perhaps it was simply the outcome of his emotional and physical trauma that year. Whatever the reason...Darlington Woods was an unforgettable, terrifying ride into the darkest places of the human heart and mind...the place where fear lives.

The twists and turns of this story take the reader on a heart-pounding ride through the dark woods of Darlington. It feels kind of like a cross between walking through a house of horror during the Fall Festival and watching a very scary movie. I'm just very glad I didn't read it at night or at bedtime! I wouldn't suggest doing so either! Mike Delloso delivers a powerful message though a fast-paced, very scary story, and it will resonate in the hearts of everyone who has faced their darkest fears and lived to tell the tale.

Utter darkness in . . . Darlington Woods  May 13, 2010
Utter darkness in . . . Darlington Woods

Michael Dellosso, one of the really nice guys of Christian fiction, writes supernatural horror--er, suspense--with a sound Christian message infiltrating the dark circumstances of his stories. His two previous novels The Hunted and Scream each depict protagonists with serious damage done to their faith who struggle to overcome horrors no one should have to face. Darlington Woods gives us another man, Rob Shields, who has suffered excruciating sorrow in his life, whose pain is palpable, and who operates his quest within the grip of crippling fear but with just enough courage to continue when there is no other option.

Voices from Rob's near past propel him to a small town where a deceased aunt has willed him her in-need-of-repair home. At the local diner he meets the owner Mary Jane and her waitress and watches a heated encounter between the owner and a chilling man Rob refers to as Wax Man. We learn that Rob is looking for his missing son, not believing the remains identified by authorities to be his son Jimmy. When Rob decides to follow his internal leads and the voices and feelings he believes to be Jimmy's, he acknowledges to himself that he struggles between his current reality and one fraught with perceived hallucination. The place he must go to find and rescue Jimmy is the one-way-in and one-way-out Darlington Woods. To his surprise the waitress Juli insists on accompanying him and convinces him that he will need her knowledge of the place to get there.

Dellosso methodically and clearly switches POVs between Rob's, Juli's, Mary Jane's, and Wax Man's throughout the story, increasing the intense suspense with different scenes and chaotic demonically charged encounters. The reader can't help but wonder if the story is allegorical or actual or both--which was my decision. The pungent smell of fear accentuates the physical barrier of its domination in a life. The admirable efforts of Rob Shields to overcome his fear, his losses, and to gain some understanding of his journey keep the reader engaged in his battles and hoping he will ultimately make the right choice.

Juli provides light-hearted moments in the depths of crisis with her quirky sense of humor and off the wall expressions. The twists at the end of the story work very well, and the satisfactory ending to this short and sometimes tragic tale gives the reader closure to the plot and a firm understanding of the premise.

For readers who want an amped-up story about a tragic man battling what he sees as horrific opposition, Darlington Woods reads fast and furious. Each of Mike's novels takes readers to scary places with terrifying circumstances and supernatural interference and intervention but conclude with satisfying victories. Mike Dellosso tackles fear, emotional pain, and spiritual warfare in a tangible story which gives credence to each of these facets in the human journey.
