Product Description
When Boston native Linda Donner travels north to Canada in search of a better life, she has no idea how quickly her life will spin out of control. After joining the Mounties, she takes a posting in rural Nova Scotia, where the firebombing of a pastor's home and the murder of a sadistic cult leader draw her into a tangle of lies.

Now, to solve the mystery and find personal deliverance from her troubled past, Linda must lose herself in the shacks and trailers of a backwoods community to confront the evil that threatens everything she holds dear. But what will happen when she frames an innocent man in the process?

The Defilers is the gripping debut of Deborah Waters Gyapong, winner of the 2005 Best New Canadian Christian Author Award.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Gripping and intense!  May 17, 2007
This book reads like a deliciously long episode of Law & Order: SVU but with a touch of Frank Peretti (I thought of that before I saw Linda's review!!) :) and insightful glimpses into the human soul. Deborah weaves the gospel message into the novel -- not in a sneaky way, nor in a cliché way, but as reality.

Very well done!

Well Written Suspense  Oct 4, 2006
The Defilers has all the components of a commercial bestseller: strong plot, interesting characters, suspense, surprise, and, at the right times, beautiful ambiguity. Gyapong's characters are multi-dimensional; they don't fit into simple stereotypes. The book tackles a difficult subject matter (the child porn industry) with grace. The Defilers is a good plane read--fast paced and well written--but its story will stay with you long after you disembark.

A gritty, compelling and hopeful thriller  Sep 11, 2006
A great read that had me pinned to the book long into the night. Deborah treats this difficult subject matter with realism and grace and with traces of Frank Peretti. I highly recommend this book.

"Best New Canadian Author" Delivers   Aug 19, 2006
If you pick up "The Defilers" by Deborah Gyapong expecting a light read, you've chosen the wrong book. This novel is gritty, fast-paced, and dripping with suspense. The main character, Linda Donner, a policewoman, investigates a murder where the main suspect is a local pastor.

Several scenes might cause uneasiness as you read - the flashbacks when Linda recalls her childhood molestation by a priest, or scenes of intense spiritual warfare. But Deborah Gyapong writes of the physical world and the spiritual world with maturity and extensive attention to detail. It's obvious Gyapong took great pains to portray spiritual warfare with realism and theological accuracy, and the police investigation rings authentic as well.

When Linda Donner thinks she must be having a breakdown of some kind, help seems to come from a highly unlikely source, the pastor. How can she trust a clergyman who's at the center of her investigation, or any clergyman after all she's overcome battling her own past and the horrible memories associated with `men of the cloth'?

As I read the final chapters of The Defilers, I realized I held my breath, turning each page with trepidation. Pick this book up and expect a gripping, mature story you won't soon forget.

Incredible New Talent Uncovered  Jul 23, 2006
This book won the Best New Canadian Author in 2005 and it is no wonder! This novel deals with tough issues and gritty subject matter in a dignified and decent way. It is an edge-of-your-seat mystery thriller. You will not be able to put it down, so start it when you know you have time to enjoy it! The characters are so real, the setting described as if you are really there. This novel delivers. A must read!
