Item Description...
Product Description The Bible is not written as a handbook for lawyers, politicians and civil servants setting out a theology of human law. Its concern is the dealings of God with human beings and of human beings with God. What then does the Bible have to say about human laws and legal systems? Looking back to the Old Testament, to the Mosaic Law, the biblical model of kingship and the prophetic call to justice, barrister David McIlroy presents a Christian perspective on the biblical view of law and justice. He also examines the claims and teachings of Christ as King, specifically contrasting these with Caesar, a king of the world. The book then concludes with a reflection on the place of human laws in the light of the Last Judgment. A Biblical View of Law and Justice seeks to wrestle with the biblical message of justice, giving Christian lawyers, civil servants and politicians a renewed vision and understanding of the potential of their work in the postChristendom world.

 | An informative read Dec 29, 2004 |
| David McIlroy has written an intelligent and practical analysis of a biblical view of law and justice, and how it applies to the individual, the state, and the church. The capstone for his arguments is chapter 1, "The Character of God", for McIlroy deftly describes who God is and the qualities that define Him. McIlroy is able to justify his arguments for 'law and justice' throughout the rest of the text on the basis of who God is and the teachings/commandments that He gives us in the Bible. Writing chapters in a historically chronological fashion (the fall of man, the Mosaic law, the introduction of a Hebrew King, etc.) McIlroy relates how the law applied to God's people in any point in time up to the present day. The author avoids the trap of presenting the law in a dry, reading format by providing historical context, other scholars' interpretations, and relative examples. From an American point of view the book is especially useful, because as the United States is polarized (religious right vs. secular left; the rights of the individual vs. the rights of the group) over the size and the role that government and laws should play in the individual's life, McIlroy looks at such questions and uses scripture to provide answers. The reader, therefore, will find the book to be an informative, eye-opening read. | | | | Synopsis from Publisher Oct 20, 2004 |
