| Dr. Collin's books have became indispensable for counselors, not only in the US, but around the world, as is my situation. There are not good reliable books edited in Spanish, and the ones we have are mostly from Jay Adams. I am sorry to hear that his works are compared to Dr.Collin's writings. In fact are two different things. Chrsitan Counseling help many people to understand their own issues, as well as, other people's issues. | Although this work is old, even for the revised and updated version, it proves to be a wonderful and accurate resource for biblical counselors. Collins covers several key areas from diagnosis, and treatment to helping those in need of counseling. He has made this work as exhaustive as he can, eventhough, the field of biblical counseling continues to broaden. Students and professional counselors will find this book useful, and most likely, refer to it often. This book does live up to its name as a "Comprehensive Guide" It addresses nearly every possible counseling issue. In my opinion, however, it is as the previous reviewer noted, "too Integrationist" Rather than build a view of the total person from the Scriptures up, as Jay Adams, Neil Anderson, and others have attempted, this book "integrates" secular pyschology with Christian ideals. For example, one of the primary tenents of secular psychology is that you do not give advice or correct the patient (p567). On the other hand, a Biblical view of sanctification would show that correction from others is part of the growth process.
Overall, the author does seem to write from an evangelical perspective and as such I am not trying to say that this book has no value, or that there are not valid insights in it, however, I do think that others who have tried to build counseling from the bottom up have produced something which is ultimately more valuable to the life of the Church. I would recommend anything from the Biblical or "Nouthetic" counseling movement started by Jay Adams as a first pass at this very challenging subject. | | | | A Founding Father of Modern Christian Counseling Jun 26, 2005 |
Several names emerged as leaders of the burgeoning Christian counseling movement in the 70s--Jay Adams, Larry Crabb, and Gary Collins among them. Collins was not only a counselor, but a student of Scripture and an entrepreneur. Under his leadership the American Association of Christian Counselors was birthed (with over 50,000 members as of 2005).
For many years, "Christian Counseling: A Comprehensive Guide" served as a primary textbook orienting counselors, pastors, and lay care givers to the field. Somewhat dated even in the revised edition, it is still a solid introductory resource and truly is comprehensive in nature.
Those in the biblical counseling movement see Collins as too integrationist. While those in the later emerging Protestant spiritual formation movement see "Christian Counseling" as overly therapeutic.
Regardless of one's orientation, Collins' work raises vital issues that continue to resonate with people helpers. Given his role in Christian counseling, the text now stands as a classic and one historical researchers will cull for years to come.
