 | Give me Christoph von Schmid! Apr 22, 2010 |
Christoph von Schmid was one of the premier authors of didactic children's fiction in the early to mid 1800s. This was a day in which it was thought that what children read should teach them some lesson or moral. That idea is considered "outmoded" today. We have passed through the stage of where children's literature was to be merely "entertaining" and have now come to the time when children's literature must be "relevant." And so we have some of the dreariest, sorriest, darkest, saddest (not to say most humanistic) stories parading as children's literature today and winning all kinds of awards. Give me Christoph von Schmid! This lovely book describes how acts of kindness by children lead to a situation where a little lamb brings about reunion within a couple of families torn apart by war. Through it all, God is given the glory for His providential hand in the affairs of these people to work out all things for their good. Godly behavior is exemplified in the characters, and deep faith in God is evident in their actions. The book includes another similar short story by von Schmid, "The Redbreast." There are a few "religious" objections which we might offer (i.e., a minister is called "pastor"), but these are relatively minor. Other books by von Schmid available from Lamplighter Press include The White Dove (1841); The Basket of Flowers (1823); The Legend of the Easter Egg (1816); The Captive; The Bird's Nest; and Rosa of Linden Castle (1845).
