| I became a Christian as an adult and brought my achiever mentality right along with me. This book began a freeing process that has lasted for years, and enabled me to know His love more accurately. I have used it for women's groups and seen the powerful emotional and spiritual healing that resulted. It's reader-friendly, but is in accord with potentially complex (and fabulous) teachers of grace such as John Piper and Martin Lloyd Jones. | I am reading this book, now, and find it very hard to put down. Chuck Swindoll does an excellent job of explaining legalism and why it destroys God's wonderful Grace. He also explains the types of people who are legalists. Overall, this was a fairly good book. It caused me to reflect on my own thoughts and actions, and to realize my own shortcomings as a follower of Christ. Mr. Swindoll gave some helpful hints on affording my brothers and sisters the grace in everyday life that they deserve. It also left me with a sense of giving myself enough grace so as not to become my own worst enemy. I also liked his chapter on grace in marriage, and I think that chapter alone would help many couples who are struggling.
Possibly the only thing I didn't care for in this book were some of the occassional side stories (ex. the one about the potted armadillo meat). I didn't understand the relevance of many of those stories to the topic at hand. It sometimes appeared as though they were merely inserted into the chapter to provide some comedic value.

What a fascinating and marvelous book. Look at yourself. Think about what you consider to be appropriate or inappropriate behavior, right or wrong. Are those listed as wrong by God? Or do you take what you think God's view is and place it as a grid over others? If so, you are a legalist.
Now, to be fair, ALL of us have touches of legalism. Swindoll concedes as much. But he points out that our goal as Christians should not be to sit in judgment of others so much as to grant grace unto others and realize that all righteous judgment is by God and God alone.
Swindoll acknowledges having a 'list.' Don't you? Don't you rank your sins according to grotesqueness? Don't you look at others and make evaluations of their holiness based upon whether they drink or smoke or gamble or whatever other acts are not expressly forbidden in Scripture?
