Reviews - What do our customers think?
A Look at Life from a Deer Stand  Dec 26, 2008
I bought this for my husband to take to his deer stand, and he was touched by the stories. He said that he could identify with most of them, and many of the lessons about life made him think about his own life and relationships, etc. He thought that all deer hunters should have a copy!

A Necessity For All Hunters  Dec 21, 2008
Once I picked this book up and started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I made the mistake of taking it hunting with me thinking "Oh, a book that will keep me thinking about hunting so I won't get too distracted..." Well actually, this book did the exact opposite. It almost made me miss a deer.

But as for the book itself, it isn't just some collection of hunting successes and failures. It's Chapman's own opinion on how morals and lessons learned through hunting are incorporated into every hunter's life. It is beautifully written and the illustrations included at the beginning of each of the chapters are not only appropriate, but they also serve as reminders of good and bad times to hunters (I certainly remember looking at a few of those pictures and thinking "Hey, I've been in that situation before too... good times...").

Chapman has done an excellent job on this book. If you have an appreciation for hunting that goes beyond the simplicity of just going out into the wilderness to shoot things, and an equally strong appreciation for your religion (The bible is quoted throughout the book for those who would like to know, but there is no in-depth interpretation of it. He isn't trying to promote religion, just show how his love for hunting and his religion go hand-in-hand), then I highly recommend that you read this book.

I lent the book to a friend so I don't have it with me as I write this review to quote it properly, but I do have an idea about how my favorite line in the book goes. It was something along the lines of making the most of your life before "life comes up behind you, taps you on the shoulder, and tells you the hunt is over." This quote goes with a short story told earlier in the chapter, but it still has a powerful meaning behind it nonetheless.

So as mentioned before, if this sounds at all interesting to you, go ahead and get the book. This is one story you'll never regret reading.

Awesome Book  Feb 5, 2008
The title review says it all! Definitely recommend to other hunters and even non- hunters

A philosophical approach to the sport of hunting...and life!  Jan 14, 2008
I bought this book for my husband last year for Christmas. I wasn't sure if he would read it because it wasn't a book about hunting techniques. Not to mention, my husband usually reads magazines or newsletters, so I took a gamble.

Before I wrapped it, I skimmed through it, and I was blown away. The author is a great writer, but it wasn't only for that reason.

I am from a very hunter un-friendly state....the great state of New Jersey. We (hunters) are routinely attacked from all sides by the most zealous of the non-hunting public...namely animal rights groups and, in some cases, our own Government representatives (Governor Corzine, for one). We are called everything from trophy hunters to killers...and everything in between. These groups accuse us of being irresponsible, cold hearted, cruel, murderers, inhumane...you name it.

This book really gets to the heart of what I, and my fellow hunters, are all about. A non-hunter who picks up this book may walk away with a different feeling of what I do....I'm not saying they may condone it, but they will understand me better by reading this book.

Most of us who hunt do so for the right reasons...love of the outdoors, appreciation for wildlife and their habitat, and respect for the traditions and skills of the sport....if you are such a hunter, this book will definitely speak to you. As hunters we are stewards of the environment...and the point is expressed so eloquently in this book.

My husband read it all in one sitting...he loved it. He closed the book, looked at me and said "This [holding up the book] is exactly why I do what I do. He nailed it on the head." And my husband has shared it with all his hunting buddies, who all got something from it as well.

I also urge wives who don't hunt and can't understand what all the fuss is about to read this book...you'll probably have a new respect for your husband's passion, and to quote my hubby understand why he "does what he does."

Buy the paperback edition instead!  Dec 18, 2007
I give the paperback edition 5 stars, but the gift edition is not the same. It only contains short, choppy excerpts from the actual book. The book is short to begin with, but the gift edition can be read cover to cover in about 15 minutes. From this site's description, I thought the gift edition was the same as the original, with additional artwork thrown in. I was wrong. I am only sharing this so that others can take this into account when placing their orders. Thanks!
