Item Description...

It took two thousand years to bring the Firstborn together. It will only take a moment...to tear them apart. The Firstborn--three ancient religious orders gifted with the ability to see past, present and future--have formed a shaky truce for the first time since the death of Christ. But dangerous forces--both human and otherwise--are rising to destroy them. Torn between the call to rescue three innocent teenage girls abducted into sexual slavery, preventing the racially motivated assassination of a prominent American politician, and dealing with the wild warnings of an elusive and mysterious prophet, all eyes turn to the Overseer--and the struggle over who will control the fate of the Firstborn. Hannah Rice, John Temple, and Devin Bathurst return in this adrenaline-packed sequel to "The Firstborn" as they are hurled into a dark world of human trafficking, shadowy government agencies, assassination, and a race against time to save everything they believe in.

2nd in Firstborn series is thrilling and smart  May 20, 2010
The Overseer by Conlan Brown is the second book in the Firstborn series. Picking up shortly after the events of the first book, John Temple is the Overseer of the Firstborn. The three groups are finally starting to work together: the Prima who see the past, the Ona who see the present and the Domani who see the future. John's decision as Overseer have put the group in danger, and things get even worse as Hannah tries to track down three girls who were kidnapped by human traffickers and Devin tries to stop the assassination of a United States senator. They are warned by a strange man named Angelo that if they stop the assassination, the Thresher will be released to hunt down and destroy the Firstborn. This knowledge splits the organization in two sides, those who support stopping the assassin and those are are in fear of their lives. Brown does a wonderful job of creating a world in which no one is completely trustworthy, and intentions are never what they seem. Political machinations, fast-paced action, and tortured romance keep the reader hooked from the first page. Brown creates an interesting dilemma in that is the life of one man worth saving if it will cost the lives of countless others. What is a good man compelled to do with the knowledge of another's impending death? It's a thrilling suspense novel with a punch of deeper questions about what it means to be a Christian.

Fascinating suspense for another Firstborn adventure  May 19, 2010
I enjoyed this book. It held me throughout. I think it is better than the first book in the series The Firstborn but I do think that a reader would benefit greatly from reading the first one before this one. In this one we follow three of the characters from the first book, Hannah, John, and Devin. The emotional and physic damage that happened to Hannah as a result of her kidnapping in the first one leads to a empathy and determination that she find the 3 girls that have just been kidnapped for the sex-trade. Mr. Brown throws in some statistics of the sex trade in America that makes one take a second look at the situation but he does so as a part of the information that Hannah must learn. John's character wasn't developed in a positive manner, in fact I wanted to tell him to grow up and become a man. I do hope that if he is in the third book, he is much stronger. Devin is the same cold calculating machine he has appeared to be in the past but there does seem to be more to his story and a hope that he isn't quite so cold. The new appearance of Angelo helps to establish some more background history on the Firstborn and introduces a wild card into the scene. I characters were real, well written, the story flowed continuously throughout the story. Definitely a good read.

Exciting, Fast Paced Thriller  May 8, 2010
For centuries the Firstborn had lived with a vague, daunting prophecy--the Thresher would come and destroy the Firstborn. Most members feared the Thresher and were willing to stop at nothing to prevent the fulfillment of this prophecy. So when an enigmatic stranger, possessing all three gifts warns them that to prevent the assassination of a corrupt senator would unleash the Thresher, the Firstborn listened. However, is this clearly unstable stranger, Angelo, correct or should Devin, John, and Hannah continue to follow the visions they have been given? Soon their individual missions begin to merge and the three find themselves conflicted between rescuing a senator or three young women who have been kidnapped with the plan to sell them into sexual slavery. With more questions than answers, they are again faced with multiple challenges, this time not only from within, but also from the government as they struggle to follow God's lead to help humanity.

Until Eric Wilson's Jerusalem's Undead series (which incidentally is a great series), I had not read another book that took advantage of Matthew 27:52-53. "The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many." Brown's Firstborn series takes advantage of this wonderful passage of scripture and like the Nistarim in Wilson's series, the Firstborn also have the duty to protect humanity and prevent destruction. That's about where the plot similarities end, but it's a great passage of scripture and in the hands of talented authors sets the stage for great adventures.

I very much enjoyed the first book in this series, The Firstborn. I loved the action and the nice parallels between the church and the Firstborn. I got lost during long fight scenes but found the book to be incredibly good for a debut novel. The Overseer, though, is a definite improvement. The fight scenes are more manageable, though still a little long at times, and the theology is better woven into the story. Fewer spiritual themes were expounded upon and more were left for the reader to decipher. This is an intelligent series and the foundation has been so well laid that subtly is an approach easily taken and works effectively. However, I do wish that the political issue of racism would have been better fleshed out. It was the motivation behind the assassination, but with the exception of a few scenes it was largely left unexplored. On the other hand, Brown did an excellent job of presenting the issue of human trafficking. It was blunt at times and gentle at others, but always tactful and well presented.

For the most part the characters are well written and fun to follow. Angelo was a nice addition and introduced a new angle to the story that looks to be very intriguing. Brown has continued to develop the returning characters nicely, with the exception of John. He really didn't work for me in this book. Hopefully some of his more core traits will return in the subsequent books.

It's a long wait until next May, but this is really shaping up to be a great series. With his first two books, Brown has demonstrated a great ability to not only tell a compelling, intelligent story, but also give the reader an excellent thrilling adventure. I look forward to seeing his career develop and reading many more books from him.

4.5 Stars...Fun, Fast, and Furious  Apr 26, 2010
With "The Firstborn," Conlan Brown established a clear, imaginative voice in the market of Christian thrillers. The book was uneven at times, but the story and pace carried me through, and I looked forward to the next in the series. "The Overseer" is here. And, I must say, Conlan has taken everything up a notch.

This time around, we follow Hannah as she races against time to protect three young women caught in the snares of a human-trafficking ring. We follow John, the new Overseer of the Firstborn, who has already landed the group in financial and political trouble. He can be a bit weak and whiny at times, but we understand his struggles as he finds himself paired with his former love, Trista Brightling. We also follow Devin, a man trying to stop an assassination attempt on a US senator. Mixed in to all this, we meet Angelo, a mysterious man with warnings of the Thresher who is coming to destroy the Firstborn.

The Firstborn are three groups of humans, raised immortal, and given unique gifts. One group can see the past; one, the present; the other, the future. Their differences in gifting could lead to incredible power if coordinated, but instead pull them apart, each faction focused on goals of its own. It's a strong parallel to the Church of today--a point that was made distinctly in the first book, but less so here. In "The Overseer," the pace is breakneck, and the settings are drawn with skill. The story is never confusing, as it races between these different plotlines toward a satisfying conclusion.

I missed some of the spiritual ideas that were threaded into the first book, and the ones given here were left a bit openended, but the scene is set for a great third book. This reads like a Ted Dekker story, in all the good ways, and Conlan Brown is clawing his way toward the top of the Christian thriller heap. This is fun, fast, and furious storytelling. I can't wait for Conlan's next.
