Item Description... All Her Life She Has Longed For The Forbidden Things, But Will Her Dreams Come At A Price Too Dear To Pay?
In the quiet Amish community of Hickory Hollow, Pennsylvania, time has stood still while cherished traditions and heartfelt beliefs have flourished. But a secret lies buried that could shatter the tranquility its inhabitants have grown to love.
When Katie Lapp stumbles upon a satin infant gown in the dusty leather trunk of her parents' attic, she knows it holds a story she must discover. Why else would her Amish mother, a plain and simple woman who embraces the Old Order laws, hide the beautiful baby dress in the attic?
On the eve of Katie's wedding to widower Bishop John, startling news staggers out of her anguished parents, and nothing prepares Katie for the devastation their confession brings. Feeling betrayed, Katie watches as the only life she has ever known begins to unravel, leaving in its wake a furrow of pain and a future of hope.

 | Visiting lancaster? Mar 23, 2010 |
| If you are planning to visit Lancaster or anywhere the Amish live, I highly recommned you read a Beverly Lewis book and this is a great place to start. She has many series and this first book in the Heritage of Lancaster County series is a sweet wholesome romance as well as a coming of age story. The shunning refers to what happens when someone in the Amish community doesn't abide by the "rules"of the communit and refuses to confess. A young Amish woman must try to decide if following the rules and expectations of her family and everyone she knows and values is worth giving up her dreams (music) and marrying a man she respects but does not love. | | | | Read February, 2010 Feb 24, 2010 |
Being Amish, you're not allowed to think for yourself when it comes to the things of God. It is what the leaders say it is and if you question it, you could face the ultimate Amish cruelty -- the ban or shunning -- where no one dares to talk to you lest they risk the ban for themselves. Singing songs other than the ones allowed at church, is forbidden. If you are caught, you must make a private confession. If not, then a public one. If you refuse to, you'll be shunned by the entire Amish community and that could be most lonely and painful. People must submit to the leaders. Women are to submit to their husbands. Along with the New Testament, the Old Testament is what they abide by. Once you've been baptized as an adult, as long as you are obedient and submit to the required leaders, you are loved and welcome.
After discovering her true heritage, things really change for the young Amish Katie. She's always found it difficult to refrain from singing songs and playing the guitar. She's been caught and warned. Folks are expecting her to marry widowed Bishop Beiler and be mother to his 5 young children. She's 22 and not getting any younger. | | | | Emotional. Flowing read. It was lovely but oftentimes sad and upsetting. I felt so sorry for Katie and the way she was treated by the Hollow people was upsetting. I also felt her own parents were hypocrites and unsympathetic, especially Katie's 'Dat'. Very well-written story and easy to read. | | | | Poorly written Feb 9, 2010 |
I just finished reading Ms. Lewis' Abraham's Daughters the 5 book series, which kept me reading as fast as i could and i give them 4.5 stars. I then went directly to "The Shunning" and how terribly disappointing it is. There is virtually no character development. I got a vague idea of the characters toward the last 1/4 of the book; the last 2 chapters really, and even then i wasn't sure. Katie's behavior is totally out of character for an Amishwoman, even a rebellious one, and it isn't even acceptable in the rest of the world. Not a well written book and not a very good sampling of Amish life. I say "skip The Shunning" and go for Abraham's Daughter. The middle couple books are a bit of a drag and should be condensed into a single book, but overall, much-much better than this one!
