Item Description... Overview When Demetria Costanas finally confronts a fellow professor to tell him that their affair is over, it's more than the relationship that's finished. After a photo is delivered to the university president and her husband, she may lose her career and marriage, too! Will sorting things out with Christian counselor Sullivan Crisp help?
Publishers Description
With one flash of a camera, Demi's private life becomes public news. She doesn't know it yet, but her healing has just begun. Christian college professor Demitria Costanas had vowed to end her affair with a colleague. But she gives into temptation one last time...and a lurking photographer captures her weakness for all to see. Quite literally, she's the woman caught in adultery. And almost everyone--herself included--has a stone to throw. Enter Sullivan Crisp, a decidedly unorthodox psychologist with his own baggage. He's well-known for his quirky sense of humor and incorporation of "game show" theology into his counseling sessions. And yet there's something more he offers...hope for a fresh start. Reluctantly the two of them begin an uplifting, uneven journey filled with healing and grace. By turns funny and touching, this story explores the ways humans hurt each other and deceive themselves. And it shows the endlessly creative means God uses to turn stones of accusation and shame into works of beauty that lead us onto the path of healing. An auspicious debut for a candid yet tender series about pain, healing, and God's invitation for second chances. |

 | Compelling. Impossible to put down! Feb 14, 2008 |
I'd never heard of this book before it landed in my mailbox, but I've loved every book I've read that was written by Nancy Rue because she usually writes pretty edgy stuff. I started reading this novel for the blog tour and I was not disappointed. I literally couldn't put it down. It captivated me from the first page! I stayed up late at night reading it and took it with me to read every chance I got. The characters were rich and the emotions were real. The story within the story, about the therapist Dr. Sullivan Crisp, was impressively heartbreaking and emotionally moving. I was totally caught up in the emotion and the trauma in the characters' lives. I cried several times. And the ending was so powerful it left me speechless.
The authors did a fantastic job at torturing their characters, but better than that, they did an incredible job of showing you the healing that took place in their lives. That is not easy to do, not like creating the pain is, anyway. You--the reader--see the benefits of not running from the pain and of learning to understand yourself and your own heart so you can truly be vulnerable and love others. Forgiveness is a strong theme in this book. So is spiritual pharisee-ism and judgmental attitudes and the pain they cause. I gained so much insight into my own life through the spiritual struggles of the characters that I can't recommend this novel highly enough. I loved it! | | | | The Adulterous Woman in the 21st Century Feb 11, 2008 |
| Healing Stones by Nancy Rue and Stephen Arterburn is the story of Demitria Costanas who gets caught on film committing adultery and has to try to put her family back together. She turns to Sullivan Crisp, a Christian therapist who is struggling with his own demons. Demi's story parallels that from John 8:3-11 of the adulterous woman. After conducting a months long affair with a fellow professor from a Christian college, Demi is caught on camera and forced to resign her position at the school. Her husband also mysteriously receives a set of the photos and kicks her out of the house and the lives of their two children. The authors tackle a difficult conundrum: how to make an adulterous woman sympathetic without soft pedaling her sin. Demi goes through several stages in her grief at the loss of her lover, job, and family. At first, she hates herself so much that she allows everyone, including her teenaged son, to abuse her. But as Demi comes to understand why she cheated on her husband, she realizes that she wants her family back and is willing to fight to do so. There are subplots involving liberalism on the college campus, as well as Sullivan's past. Sullivan is an intriguing character who uses game shows to help his patients make breakthroughs in their therapy. The authors deal with tough issues about sin and forgiveness and what it really means to be a Christian. The story is powerful, and Demi's husband's last words to her brought tears to my eyes. | | | | Best Life Lesson Fiction Ever! Feb 5, 2008 |
With unforgettable characters and true to life situations, this powerful novel grips you from the first page and doesn't release it's hold until the final climatic scene. And do NOT make the assumption you have all the pieces in place...this duo knows how to write, and they aren't afraid to toss a curve ball in now and then--and they all are very nicely done, I might add!
Ultimately, Nancy and Stephen perfectly blend story and counsel to remind us what it is to truly be forgiven, and what it is to truly forgive. The story is so engaging and page-turning you simply forget you're getting counseling as an added bonus:-)
Even more exciting...this is going to be a series with Dr. Sullivan Crisp, and I just love that guy! His unique brand of counseling adds humor and wit--I only wish we had more psychologists like Sully around.
| | | | Healing Stones - A life-changing book!! Feb 1, 2008 |
There are some books that, after you have read them, you know without a doubt you will never, ever be the same again. Healing Stones is one such book. This book speaks to the very heart of what grace and mercy are all about. There is nothing hidden. The ugliness of sin is depicted in such raw wretchedness you want to turn away from it. The pain of remorse is so poignant and real that your own nerves are left feeling raw. The price of sin embraced and unrepented is shown in gory detail.
And yet...the gentle touch of God's forgiveness and the loveliness of His still, small voice will whisper His promises to you as the characters discover what it means to forgive and be forgiven. When you read the final pages of this book, you will weep with joy over all that Christ has done for His children, for you will feel His touch in your very marrow. And you will never read the parable of the woman caught in adultery the same...
A dramatic description of a book? Perhaps. But for me...for where this message finds me in my own walk of faith and in the midst of my own trials...this book will never, ever be forgotten. For it is written in Christ's precious blood upon the pages of my heart.

| Hey, this is a great novel that really touches the reader. I got in to the characters and the plot kept me reading to the end. In fact, it bugged my wife that I couldn't put it down until I finished it. A great read! | | | Write your own review about Healing Stones
