Item Description...

Overview
This course is designed to be a student?s first systematic introduction to the sciences. Although it can be used for eighth grade (especially if the student has recently left the public schools), it is typically used best in the seventh grade. The course covers such topics as the scientific method, designing experiments, simple machines, archaeology, geology, paleontology, biology, and human anatomy and physiology. Its scope, therefore, is quite wide. There are many hands-on experiments to do, and they all use household items

Better that I expected  May 18, 2010
The condition of this book was better that I expected for a *used* book. It was more like *new*. We've used the Apoligia Biology and Chemistry books, so we were familiar with them and like them.

Very Thorough!  Mar 31, 2010
My 13 yo 8th grade son used this book. This is not your typical text even though it is laid out in pretty much the same way. What makes this book different, aside that it is a christian text with a creationist viewpoint is that the review questions, study guide questions and test questions don't require typically regurgitated answers straight from the chapters. Answering questions requires thinking rather than just memorizing. There is plenty of memorizing too, but for the most part the student has to explain answers in his own words that show he knows the material.

The experiments are great and can be completed mostly with items you already have in the house.

Amazingly Thorough and Understandable  Feb 22, 2010
Dr. Jay L. Wile has done it again. He has written an exciting text book that keeps my students' attention.

Please note: It is a CHRISTIAN TEXT BOOK and in this study of creation vs. evolution it is essential to know this. Wile tries to do an even handed job of explaining both positions but he is a creationist which is a plus for those who want to teach from that perspective without revising text content in a secular book.

Wile manages to make complex ideas such as 'uniformitarianism' and 'geological column', 'principle of superposition' and the structure of DNA understandable to the upper elementary- junior high level student.

Exploring Creation with General Science begins with a brief history of science and then discusses science, applied science and technology. Wile does an excellent job of explaining the way to make assertions about discoveries and archaeology using the internal, external, and bibliographic tests.

There are scattered throughout the chapter questions for students to do "On Your Own" (with answers at the end of each chapter) and a thorough study guide question page to prepare for the end of the chapter exam.

This text book moves from the origin of creation to study of the human digestive, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic, endocrine, urinary and nervous systems. Really a very amazing amount of science all very clearly presented and understandable to the student.

Kudos to Dr. Wile!

Great!...Just Skip Around at Your Discretion.  Feb 17, 2010
I have been home-schooled all my life. I've had a long history of frustration with weak curriculum, so I think that perhaps my say will put some weight on whether you should buy this book or not.

This was the science book that brought it all together for me. Since some of my education was full of holes (from troubleshooting through so much stupid curriculum, as I have said) this book was the one that filled in the gaps. I read it senior year, and I still learned a lot from it. This author is sometimes hung up on his own dissertation of evolution (which is good if you are hoping to present your student with some proofs against it--something they don't teach in public schools); he also is prone to rambling, as if his editor just skimmed through the book and then published it. But the heart of "General Science" is spot on. I got more out of it than I did in four years of A Beka Book's science.

Feel free to skip around, though. I think that you could get a better history of science elsewhere than in the brief, confusing summary that he offers in the beginning. Also, as I stated before, the chapters about catastrophism and uniformitarianism can be laid aside for older students, or passed up altogether. And unless your kid is overly fascinated about HOW scientists do experiments, you can skip those chapters where he explains in exhaustive detail those things which only an aspiring scientist would care about.

All that said, this book is great for whether you are homeschooling, or just looking for a good textbook for your kids. If you liked this book, I recommend Dr. Wile's other books "Exploring Creation with Physical Science" and "Exploring Creation with Biology".

Not good at explaining  Nov 16, 2009
This book does now explain things very easliy. You will learn useless information. This book is supposed to help you want to learn about science but my daughter is dreading it. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!!
