Wonderful Translation, Why has supply disappeared and price tripled?  Nov 30, 1999

Merci beaucoup

What A Great Book!  Nov 30, 1999
As a college student with 3 years of high school French under my belt, this Bible is amazing! It is sweet to use it to keep up on my verb tenses and such, all while opening up a whole new realm of vocabulary to me as well! I really like it!

la Parole  Nov 30, 1999
Though not familiar with this revised edition, I use the Louis Segond translation when I read the Bible in French. It is an edition that is both faithful to the original texts, and readable. Now, I am aware that there has been some concern over the use of the feminine word 'parole' to refer to 'the Word' in the beginning of the Gospel according to John(L'Évangile selon Jean); allow me to make a quick explanation (coming from a French-speaker whose native tongue is English).

There are two words that can be translated 'word' in French. One of these is 'mot,' which is masculine in gender, but means literally, one spoken or written word. The other is the feminine 'parole,' which is closer to the Greek 'logos.' This means that some verses would seem to be referring to Christ (the Word) as a 'she.' However, this is only a problem in English. In French, it is common for a man to refer to himself in the feminine, or in the plural, just as it is common for a woman to refer to herself in the masculine, or in the plural. French nouns, unlike English, all have gender (there are no 'neuter' nouns). When one refers to oneself, the gender of the personal pronoun is in accordance with the gender of the noun to which it refers, not to the speaker. For example, I could say 'Ma femme,' meaning 'my wife.' The personal pronoun 'ma' is feminine, yet it indicates that the word 'femme' is feminine, not that I am a woman. Likewise, when the Word is referred to as 'la Parole,' it is not an indication of Christ's gender, but the gender of the word 'parole.'

nice  Nov 30, 1999
The only French exposure I have is three years in high school, albeit from a great teacher. Even so, I can easily read 90% of the text, and using context clues and my previous knowledge can use this Bible just like any other I own. Plus it's a bible, so it's great anyways.

It's missing books.  Nov 30, 1999
This French language Bible is missing seven books from the Old Testament. I like to read the Bible in French to improve my French language skills, but I could use a French-language Bible that includes Wisdom, Tobit, Judith, Sirach, Baruch, and 1st and 2nd Maccabees.

On the other hand, if you don't require those seven books to be in your Bible, this should be a wonderful resource for you. It is nonetheless a good resource for learning French!
